Question:
How long after u eat?

If something is gonna disagree with you and make you sick, how long after you eat it, would you experience dumping syptoms? Thanks! — dixieb (posted on March 2, 2003)

I haven't eaten the sugary foods due to a profound fear of NOT dumping. I don't want to find out that I am one of the 30% post-ops RNYs that don't dump on sugars.
However, I do dump on high-fat foods (no diarrhea or vomiting though, at least to date). This is almost immediate - about 5-15 minutes after eating the food I shouldn't have....JR

1 month post-op and I haven't experienced dumping but I did have an awful "food heart attack" as I call it the other day. The pain was incredible. If it wasn't for the fact that I know that's how the pouch fights back I would have sworn I was having a real heart attack. Bottom line is I ate way too fast and didn't chew enough. It was a lesson I will not forget anytime soon. It eventually worked it's way through but I was miserable for a good 60-90 minutes. The smart thing would have been to throw it up but I hate throwing up.
As far as the dumping and how soon it would depend on what it is that you ate. If it was a sugary juice you would likely notice things very quickly. I've always heard about 15-20 minutes, but I guess it would depend on your particular body.

Everybody has very different dumping experiences. Go to the top of this page, highlight library and type in dumping as your search word. You will find tons of previous postings on this subject.
