Question:
I would like to hear from Post-Op's who started in the 350's range

I had the lap RNY on 2/14/03. I was 352 lbs. pre-op. I am almost 1 yr. post-op and as of this past Nov at my last apptmt. I am only down 76 lbs. I am pissed off at myself. Everything has been very hard for me. I am craving sweets, carbs, etc. It was so much easier at the beginning like in the first 2 mths. or so. Why is it so hard now? I have these cravings and sometimes I can eat more than other times and I find it hard to believe if the stomach is so small. I am told it can only expand to about the size of a lemon or 6 oz. My surgeon told me that. Anyway- I really would like some support in knowing that I am not alone and would like to correspond with you if you had your surgery around the same time as me and started in about the same weight category. I hate the scale and want to throw it away!!! Anyone else frustrated? It was so easy-- the weight seemed to just slide off at the beginning. I am not in a regular exercise program but do walk as much as possible. I am in between part time jobs now and recieve disability. I really want to speed up my weight loss. Having these big cravings and feeling alone!!! I live with my fiancee and he is supportive of me. I don't know sometimes why I feel like I am having so much trouble.    — Bonnie R. Have you been scoped to make sure you don't have a staple line disruption? (this is NA of you are transected) <P> Try reviewing the Pouch rules again and give it a real try again. Up your protein and water to help with the carb cravings.

no, your not alone- NO ONE call tell me my stomach is the size of a Lemon !! I can eat ALOT !! I have lost all the weight I've wanted to- but I had to put a MAJOR effort into it- I've had to use ALOT of willpower- I know it can be frustrating when the scale does not move- I'm sure everyone is going to tell you the same thing- You are going to have to use your TOOL the best you can- believe me I KNOW HOW HARD TEMPTATION is...If your snacking on stuff you shouldn't be ...DON'T BRING THEM IN THE HOUSE- if they are not there, you can't eat em'...Tomorrow is a new day..pick yourself up, brush yourself off.....You can do it !

You are not alone. I had open rny on 3/7/03 and I started at 389 pounds. I am still at 296. Yes I get depressed about it and even cry. Yesterday I joined a gym and decided I was going to have to get busy and work harder. I would like to lose 75 more pounds. I am not trying to get skinny just a lot less fat is my motto. Another thing that made me want to try harder was the fact that my nine year old son weighed 195 or so pounds at his yearly check up yesterday. My heart cries out for him. I have to do something for the both of us. Hang in there and do not give up.

To Wabbit in Vermont- Thanks for your response to me and congratulations on your success. As far as the stomach getting to the size of a "Lemon"--- this is the information that I had read, and what I have been told from my surgeon. I was told that it gets to the size of about a lemon was his examples. Also- from reading enough articles and Carnie Wilson's books-- she has said the same thing about the lemon. I have been searching websites and several of them say the same thing about the lemon. Just to clarify--- I wasn't telling "YOU" that "YOUR STOMACH" is the size of a "LEMON." I am glad you are doing so terrific! Keep up the great work!!!!!

I started at 358 and had my surgery on 3/26/03. I have lost 92 lbs so far. Before my surgery I never craved sweets or bread but did crave pasta. Since surgery I do crave sweets and bread but maybe that is because I almost never allow myself to have them. Weight is still coming off for me but I average about 10 lbs a month. It was definately easier in the first few months. Now if I want to make my 10 lb. month average, I must limit my carbs, walk a minimum of 3 times a week (at least 30 minutes each time) and push the protein. During the holidays I did not do my walking, ate a little of everything I wanted (including all sweets and other carbs)and I lost a total of 2 lbs for all of December. I noticed this week that my scale is now back to moving down. Yes, we will have to be more strict on ourselves but the tool is still working. You mentioned receiving disability so I hope you are able to get some exercise in--it will help. But it seems that you and I both will have to work harder and be more strict with ourselves. Some seem to lose with very little effort but I've had to work at it (and I should be working harder). Best wishes to you!
