Question:
What am I doing wrong?

I'm 7 and 1/2 months out (LAP RNY) and have lost 116 pounds thus far, but the scale has not moved for about 3 weeks now and I have no idea why. I'm trying very hard, exercising about 3 times a week at Curves and walking about 2-3 miles on the weekends. I eat about 1000-1200 calories a day. I was stuck at this weight a few years ago at my last attempt at dieting...is it possible I won't be able to get below it (250s), because it's just all very disheartening. I don't want to be done losing yet! Any advice?    — Ladybug M. (posted on April 23, 2003)

I read alot of the WLS boards. From what I gather, it is perfectly normal to hit a plateau, or you could be losing inches and not pounds, and it always seems to jump right back in after the plateau is over. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hang in there. It is normal to plateau. I am only 5 months post op and I have hit a few myself. Go back to writing down every thing you are eating. You may discover you are taking in more non-protein items than you think. Make sure you are gettin in you 64 ounces of water. Make sure you get in you protein first. If you are full then don't eat non protein items. Stay with high protein snacks. Just hang in there. Your body needs to adjust.Good luck to you!

If this is the first plateau that you have experienced in 7 1/2 months, wow, you are lucky. Short answer, you aren't doing anything wrong. And you are not done losing. Just keep up what you are doing-eat well (protein first), lots of water, keep up the exercise and it will break soon enough. Something that has worked for me and others-vary your exercise routine, and vary your daily calorie intake. Try 1000 calories for a few days, then 1200 for a few days, then perhaps 1300, then back to 1100. It tricks the system into moving again-may work for you too.

Hang in there Ladybug ! It's a plateau, mix up your diet a little, I did while I was on a nasty 3 month plateau (Man I hated it) , I started by decreasing my calories, then went from upping my calories to NO CARBS !, Since mixing things up, I've kicked it, I know how depressed it can make you, just hang in there, and mix it up. I'm now no longer on NO CARB thing, I'm watching my calories and getting in about 1600-1800 calories a day, (eating every 2-3 hours) to keep my matabolism running in high mode, I also upped my protein to like 100+ grams a day! ..... Good luck with your journey, Post op 11 months down 128 pounds, (15 pounds from goal)

Don't worry...it does happen....I did not lose an ounce for 9 weeks....I was about to go crazy. Then during the next week lost 6 pounds. I am 11 1/2 months out and have only lost 10 pounds in the last 3 months. But I am down an amazing 140 pounds....SO I AM THRILLED. Hang in there, you are doing everything right.

If you have upped your exercise recently, you may still be burning fat but are gaining some muscle. Ive heard that wieght loss slows dramatically after the first 6 months..so this may play a part in it.
