Question:
Am I getting enough vitamins?

My surgeon prescribed a vitamin called "Natachews" which is a chewable form of a prenatal vitamin. He also prescribed Potassium pills. Now, The natachews go down great, but the Potassium pills are HUGE. I tried taking it one time and was in horrible pain for 3 hours. I told the nurse this, and they suggested that I open up the capsule and mix it in applesauce or something. I tried that and it was horrible tasting and made me nauseaus. So, anyway, I am just taking the natachew, and the the office doesn't seem overly concerned about missing the potassium. They told me to try to eat some bannana every day...which doesnt sit very well with my pouch. My question is this...should I go and search for additional vitamin supplements? Like calcium, iron, etc? From reading everything on here, I am not 100% sure one natachew is gonna be everything I need for the rest of my life. I dont want to get osteoporosis or something in a few years. Any suggestions would be appreciated! (open RNY 7/23/02 -41 lbs) PS- does anyone know if you can mix protein powder in sugar free pudding? Will the protein stay the same?    — Shawnie S. I always mixed sf/ff pudding with protein powder. After it sets fold in some sf/ff cool whip. You'll love it. Good Lux

Hi... I am 5 months post op and down 71# and feeling super. I have a daily routine that works for me. Since surgery I have kept a little stand by my bed. It has a few safe snacks such as crackers, pretzels, things like that and all of my meds and all of my vitamins. I have a pill box where in am I take: Super multivitamin, magnesium, Vitamin A, and one of my meds plus I take a l/2 T of Tropical Oasis liquid Calcium Citrate (mmm). Dinner time I take l/2 T of the Calcium. Bedtime I take my meds and a Vitamin C chew. Two times a week I take Iron. For protein: I use Pro Score 100 chocolate with 6 oz of 2% milk and l/2c of ice and blend (sometimes add in a little SF chocolate pudding). This is breakfast. It gives me 32g of protein. Dinner while cooking I do a smaller shake and then have my regular dinner. I drink about 80 oz of water a day or more. So far I'm doing great. I went through about 8 different proteins before being told of this one and just love it. Its really important you get those vitamins in and I doubt just one prenatal will do it. I get most of my vitamins exc. calcium on gold card week at GNC and save $. I also am taking a potassium tablet from there and have no problem with it. You might try making a smoothie with fruits, ice and sf crystal lite to get your banana in too. My best to you.

Hi, I just want to add my two cents about the potassium. I'm 33 yrs. old, Lap RNY May 23rd, 2002. I started having severe heart palipatations 4 weeks ago, it was happening on a daily basis, I thought I was going to die! It ended up that I was very low on potassium. Yes, they are horse pills, I open them up and pour it into a teaspoon of yogurt, a couple of bites and its gone! I never knew that potassium was sooooo important! I'm back to "normal" now.....lol.... But be careful, okay!! GOOD LUCK!!!

Some other good sources of potassium are v8 juice, CranGrape (artificially sweetened), and salt substitute. I try to get these in some each day--they are easier than bananas

Be sure in addition to your multivit you also take calcium citrate and B12. Orange juice also has a lot of potassium in it. That is one of my favorite things to drink and I have to really watch it cuz it goes down really good. The multivit should have some potassium in it. Unless you are having a specific problem with low potassium I don't know why you couldn't just get some in your diet. You might ask your dr if that is a better alternative. I was the same way with the iron pills when I was pregnant. One look at them and I was ready to toss my cookies. They were SOOOO nasty!

Shawnie, There is a form of Pottasiun called KLorrVess, it dissolves in water and tastes great (orange). NOw it is effervescent and I don't know if a tiny post-op pouch can handle it, but maybe if you let it get flat first. My advice talk to your MD about it.
