Question:
Am I doing this Right?

I had surgery on 8/28/02 i'm down approx 27 pounds. I think it's a bit slow, but I keep assuring myself that things will pick up. I list my daily meals on fitday.com and this is what i've come up with. My protein fluctuates between 40 & 50 grams daily, Carbs are between 35-45grams daily, fat 35-45 grams daily and caloric intake is between 600-800 calories. I have read previous questions and postings about carbs and protein counts. Is there anyone out there that during their 1st 6 months consumed this amount and lost weight. Should I cut back on something, add something or just stop worrying and keep doing what i'm doing. I just want to make sure i'm doing this right. I really don't want this to end up another failure. Thanks to all.    — Irene M. (posted on October 19, 2002)

I wouldn't be worried with the amounts so much as what your eating. The carbs & fats are way to high. Eat your protien first, then veggies, then fruit, then if you have enough room carbs. I get all my carbs from veggies & fruit and stay away from all the "white foods"(bread, potatoes, pasta, rice). Every once in a while I will eat a sandwich or slice of pizza but very rarely. I'm 7 months out so I can eat more than you but here is an example of what I might eat in a day. morning I eat 1/4 cup of eggbeaters made into an omellette with ham and swiss cheese and 1/2 bannana. Lunch I eat 1 morningstar veggie burger w/ marinara sauce & mozerella cheese melted on top(no bun cooked in the oven like a pizza except the veggieburger is the crust)and a salad w/ lite dressing. Dinner I might eat 2 to 3 oz pork chop (grilled or broiled in the oven) and a salad w/ lite dressing. I get at least 80 oz of water throughout the day and usually have a sugarfree popsicle in the evening for a snack. I am 7 mos post op and down 126lbs and still losing 2 to 4 lbs per week, still need to lose about 60 lbs. I hope this helps.

Irene, I, too, use fitday.com religiously. I eat probably 20-40g of cards and 20-50g of fat. I am eating anywhwere form 60-90g of protein per day and about 600-900 calories. I DO NOT DRINK PROTEIN SHAKES! I can eat pretty much everything. I am 2 months out and down 45lbs. I met with my nutrionist the other night and the only thing she wanted me to change in my diet was (1) eat less cheese, only 1oz per day and (2) don't eat a protein bar everyday unless you are low on protein. Good Luck!

I agree with the last poster--cut down on eating carbs and fats. be sure to drink all your water and eat protein. i know it can be hard--carbs taste so good and fat is what makes it good. I had surgery one day before you, so I still struggle with these same problems. You don't say how you getting your carbs, but i try to only eat saltine crackers. ilookeed at your profile and you have a low BMI, so maybe you will just take it off slower. everyone is so different, i can eat anything and nothing botters me. I'm a little disappoinded fact--make everything look look. my surgry was 1 day before you--i'm also a low BMI--and have lost 33pounds plus the 20 they put on me in the hosptial-- but the nurse told me that the offical weight on the day of surgery was on the scale the morning of surgery. as long and the scale moves down each day, i don't get concerned. i weight only once a day in the morning.... good luck to you and feel free to email me at [email protected] can compare notes with each other

My doc got upset with me because I wasn't eating enough. He said I MUST have 60 grams of protein and to eat smaller, more frequent meals(snacks). Eating will increase your metabolism. He also said NOT to count calories. My weightloss was very very slow, but it was over a year before I finally reached the 100 lb mark. I'm now 21 mos post-op (RNY) and I am down 120 lbs. and feel great. Don't worry, it will come off.

I know that there are alot of people who say that you are eating too many carbs and fat. You are eating the same amounts as I am. I am a few days shy of my three month anniversary of my surgery and I have lost 70 pounds. I look at it like this. I am watching what I eat and exercising and drinking about 80-100 oz of water per day. I have had the occasional plateau, but they have broken. I feel like I am doing something right. I can always adjust in the future if it isn't seeming to work. I have read so many different things that my head spins. Some people are eating about 100 grams of carbs per day and doing fine.

My suggestion......stop stressing over it. It will come off in the end, enjoy the ride. : )-----12 mos post op...at goal....never counted a calorie or gram of anything.

You are doing great. you are getting in about the same amount of calories and carbs that I am. I do more protein because I drink a supplement. The only thing you didn't mention is how much fluid are you getting in? I try for the 64 ounces but usually get in around 40-50 ounces a day.
