Question:
Just Because You Can Eat It Doesn't Mean You Should....

I read the questions daily in digest for and I see many time people say that they are eating more or can't figure out why they are gaining weight. I am 3 months post op from a Lap AGB. I am on a plateau and a person on a webgroup posted this remark and it has been helping me to stay on track...... "Just because I can eat more, Doesn't mean I should". It has helped me at many moments of desire over need. I hope it too will help some of you. I will never take credit to the line, but I will share it with people who can benifit from the advise that lies with in its words. Thanks for posting that. It's something I've read several times here and has helped me too. That should be the motto of every WLS patient. It's kind of like your car can move faster than 100 mph....doesn't mean you should drive that fast.

GREAT THOUGHT !!! I feel like I have an obligation to myself and my WLS team to follow my program and be successful. My motto has been "Nothing taste as good as being thin feels".

Thank you! I needed to see that in black and white. I've been struggling a bit this week with eating right. Realizing I don't dump on much has been a major hinderence. I now wish there were a surgery to kill the taste buds.LOL. I have only gained about 3 lbs. As of this moment I am going to go right back to basics. I want to do it before 3 turns into 10 turns into 40 and so on. Thank you again for those wonderful words of wisdom. ::HUGS:::

I've also seen this 'remark' and it makes me mad every time I see it.. Because the person who posts it has NO CLUE what the other person is going thru. If "just because you can doesnt mean you should' WORKED then EVERYONe on here did NOT need surgery. We could have 'done' that before surgery. What alot of people 'fail' to realize that we have surgery so our bodies will help us with food restricions.. IF that person has the RNY there are times it 'failes' and 'allows' the person to over eat.. You have surgery to help; if your surgery has 'failed' you are going to have trouble. We had surgery on on tummies NOT our heads and if our tummies are not 'working' right; that person could have trouble. Usually the person posting that saying... does NOT have any mechicanal problem.. if they did they would know that that saying is insulting.

Helen, I don't see anything insulting about this good advice. Most people don't have mechanical problems. If the advice doesn't pertain to you, then don't listen to it. For me I have to rely on more than just what I CAN eat. I need to think about what I SHOULD eat. I don't see how keeping that maxim in mind is insulting to anybody in the world.

Obviously the poster wasn't talking about someone with "mechanical" problems regarding WLS. She was offering a word of advice to people who needed it. If you don't need it, it's fine, but there are many who do. This sight is to ask and offer advice to EVERYONE. If it's a piece of advise that doesn't work for you, well, then don't use it. But don't knock it either. Personally ( just MY opinion) I think we fail the surgery more often than the surgery fails us. ::Shrug:: Just my 2 cents. :-)

Christy, My surgeon told me that 3.5 yrs. ago. I remember telling him I was surprised how much I ate at a meal. I ate like 22 large scallops. I wasn't full for that meal. My surgeon told me just because I can dsn't mean you do. He was referring to getting used to eating proper portion size and not trying to see how much you can eat etc...I wsn't trying to do that. I just kept eating until I got that "full" feeling and for that meal I didn't. I don't know if that's where you got the saying from but it has helped me immensly more times than I can remember.
