Question:
Does anyone know if Dr. Mason is still alive and if yes, where he lives ?

Dr. Mason was a pioneer in bariatric surgery. He practiced at the Univ. of Ia Hospital in Iowa City, IA. My mother had bariatric surgery in 1978 and he was the surgeon. She had been sick prior to the surgery and died the day after surgery, due to a blood clot. I remember him coming over and talking to me as he left the hospital that day. He was very nice and a good Dr. It was just one of those things. I never thought I would ever consider having the surgery myself. But suddenly last Dec I decided it was the right thing to do. I had open RNY on 3/6/02. I couldn't tell my Dad, sister or brothers about it until 2 weeks after the fact. I knew they would try to talk me out of it, because of Mom. Since everything worked out, they're fine with it. Actually they're very happy for me. So far I've lost 90 lbs. and have about 118 to go. But I do think about Dr. Mason and wondered if anyone knew anything more about him? Thanks.    — jan M. (posted on August 10, 2002)

Well, he was alive & well the last week of June at the ASBS conference. He's over 80 and as charming (and interested in the field) as ever. I believe he still lives in Iowa.

I just spoke to my mother. She also had a mason surgery in 1976. She has had email contact with him in the past few months and he is still on staff at the Univ of Iowa, but is in his 80's and is no longer in practice. She has his email address thru the univ, email me and I can give it to you. She will send it to me. I believe she found it on the university website. She also says that he has a website as well. He is still very interested in his patients, and answered some of her questions that she had.
