Question:
Cravings b4 and during period

I am 3 months post op and had my first period in like three years (yeah I was totally scared!) Two weeks to the day and during my period I craved salty foods like a mamajama! Has anyone else felt like that? and Why salty food?    — Michelle S. (posted on February 18, 2002)

Hi Michelle, I am a little farther post op than you but not much. Every month, I feel hungry actually starved totally to death right before my period and during it, I have a lot of cravings, sugars, fats, and salts, I usually eat a little hersheys kiss, and a I try and stick with the fruits for the rest of my cravings. I try and stay away from the bad things, but I figure I may as well have a little piece, because preop, I would have eaten a whole bag, and wanted more. Well hope this helps a little. I crave salt so badly I lick the back of my hand, salt it, and lick it off. They have done bloodwork and stuff and everything is fine. This isn't new to the surgery though. Even before surgery I would salt chips, salt salsa, I gain almost 6 lbs before every period, then I pee like crazy and lose it all about the day or two after I start. Good luck

I get strong carb cravings before my period which is no different than when I was preop. Its just a bit more anxiety provoking now because I'm trying so hard to stick to protein first and complex carbs. Sadly, I don't seem to crave fresh veggies lol.

I also have a lot of cravings around my period. Don't know why--maybe we need to hold onto some extra water during out period??? Our bodies often regulate themselves in ways we don't understand. LOL One thing I like is to get some of those thin tortilla chips and some salsa. I eat one ounce (7 chips) of the chips with the salsa and 2 ounces of cheese. That way I get my protein AND my salty-crunchy craving is satisfied. For sweets cravings I have started eating a protein bar for my mid-morning meal. It has really helped me cut down on carb consumption and helps me get to my goal of 100g protein/day. Hope this helps!
