Question:
I'm 10 months out and no matter what I do the scales and inches don't move, is this i

As I stated, I'm 10 months out. I'm 5'2", started at 281.5# and am now 165.5#. Surgery was 5-13-03. I drink about 80 oz. of water, get in all my needed protein, and watch the carbs. I haven't lost in over 4 weeks. I exercise 3-5 days a week. I've recently cut down of weight training and have increased cardio up to 45-60 minutes. I was a size 26/28 and now fit in size 12 petites. My question is could I be done losing. My frame is med-large and I now have very good muscle strength and tone. My current BP is 107/64 with a resting HR of 62 bpm. I'm very frustrated about my current plateau but am very happy about my total loss (-116#). Does anyone have any suggestions about other ways to "jump start" my body into losing again?    — Ainsliek (posted on March 30, 2004)

Its my firm belief its possible, just a lot of work. On two occasions now since I got to goal I have lost well again. Doing demolition at a friends fire destroyed home shoveling debris for 4 or 5 hours a night 4 nights a week. Also did it recently affter getting a stock job at a grocery store. again many hours a night of heavy work, I volunteer for the havy moving. How bad do you want to loose the remaining weight??? Try upping exercise like doubling what your doing now. I know its not easy but you will be expending way more calories and they have to ciome from somewhere.

I'm struggling with this - do I work harder to lose more or do I just accept where I am? You are still pretty early out at 10 months and I don't think you are done given how hard you are working, but what is your goal weight - might it be too low for your body type? You are already a success by having lost 77% of your excess weight (I'm assuming a goal weight of 130 for your height).

I think you're not losing until you've maintained for 6 mos. I didn't lose from month 5-6 and I am crawling along now. I think you'll keep losing on your own. How many calories do you eat a day?

You say you are watching the carbs but maybe you need to keep a food journal for a week to see exactly what you are eating. I know that the further I am out (15 months now) and the more that I can eat, the easier it is to keep poorer track of what is really going in my mouth. I will also say that as I got within 20 pounds of goal the weight loss took much more effort and was MUCH slower. It took me from October to January to lose the last 10 pounds and now that I am here I would like to lose another 5-10 pounds and I would imagine that it will take me that long again.

I've set a personal goal of 135#. I'm eating between 800-1200 cal. per day. Since I've upped my water and protein I have noticed my pouch has "shrunk". I've also wondered if I'm eating too little but I don't want anymore food.

You're hitting the time when it really slows down. The body just does what it wants. You might want to shake up your exercise routine. Do something different every day. Don't eat less, that will slow the metabolism.

I am 10 mos out too, 5/9/03. I just recently plateaued for 4 weeks. I didn't change my exercise routine since all I do is walk because of my hernia which is huge. I always ate instant oatmeal for breakfast. I changed it to a protein shake or a yogurt for breakfast and lost 7.5 pounds in what seemed like less than 2 weeks. 314/176.5/170

Hi, Ainslie. I share your concerns and, in many ways, your profile. I started at 270.5 (actually at 278 before they made me prep for surgery with a liquid diet). I'm 5'1.5". I had surgery about 7 months ago. I now weigh 165 pounds and am seriously stuck. Things have slowed down considerably over the last couple of months. But in the last few weeks, they've simply stopped. I too work out, 5 days a week for almost 2 hours at a time. I never miss a work out. I do cardio and weights. I'm feeling very strong and very fit. Best I've felt in forever. I drink all my water. I avoid carbs (though not religiously like some of you amazing creatures). I'm down to a size 8 and weigh less than I have since my sophomore year of high school. I've always weighed more than I look like I weigh. Big muscles, big boobs, big hair. Ha. I'm beginning to wonder if I've set my goals too low (so to speak). I can't imagine getting back my 130 pound junior high frame. Just seems impossible. I'm wondering if I'm done now or close to it as well. Incidentally, my recent blood tests showed I need to increase my protein. My nutritionist said this is most likely due to the amount of weight training I'm doing. I'll give that a try and hope it works. Sorry I can't be of more help. It always helps me to know someone's in the same boat. Paddling right along side you...XOXO Jen

You've lost an incredible amount of weight in a short period of time. Your body is taking a break right now, which is not a bad thing. What you can do is shake up your routine to see if that will help the scale start moving again. Try eating an extra few hundred calories a day for a week (protein shake, for example), then the next week, cut back a few hundred a day. If your exercise routine is the same thing, try a differnt form of exercise. I had plateaued for a few months at around 13 mo post-op, then I moved. The preparation in the middle of the hot summer, packing boxes, carrying boxes, unpacking boxes, caused me to lose 4 pounds in a month..something different to my normal routine...
