Question:
I had rny surgery on July 20th 2001 and have not lost as much as I would have liked

to by now. So far I have lost 73 pounds. Is that pretty mcuh on goal for someone starting out at 5'4 - 246 pounds? I feel like I should be in the 160's by now. I have increased my water intake and have been walking alot. What else should I do to get the weight off a little quicker?    — Dawn H. (posted on December 20, 2001)

I think you are right on target. You are a "lightweight" when it comes to morbid obesity (me too). I think your progress has been very good. I lost quickly for about 4 months and then slowed tremendously. At first I worried that I wasn't losing fast enough but then realized that I wasn't going to lose as fast as some of the larger patient. I am now 14 months post op and have lost to my personal goal even though MetLife says I still need to lose 15 pounds (I'D BE A STICK!!!). I think you're doing GREAT and I'm really proud of you accomplishment. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I had surgery May 22nd and weighed 237 lbs. and I just hit the 70 pound mark this morning! I think if I lost any faster the people who don't know I had surgery (which is everyone at work) would think I had some horrible disease and was dying! Don't sweat the slow loss as long as you are loosing!

I had an open rny on 7/17/01 and just hit 70 lbs this morning, too! I started at 287.8. Do I wish I was losing faster - you bet I do!! That is, of course, until I realize that I probably will have an easier time with the sagging skin, etc. AND it helps to read that there are other "slow losers" like me - so I don't feel like a non-losing loser!! And I read from a lot of longer term post ops that they lost just like we do and they meet their goals and keep the weight off....while I would like to lose it all overnight, I am more looking forward to keeping it all off. Sounds like you're doing good! Hang in there! Happy Holidays!

I had open RNY 7/17 and am now down 74lbs...I started at 282 at 5'3. I thought the loss was a little on the slow side too...but the more folks I talk to I feel like I'm right on target...I'm very pleased.

Most people lose till they are about 18 months out. You are no where near done. Just have to be patient.

Hi Dawn..sounds like your doing great! I had surgery 4/10/01 starting out at 253lbs..5'4. I'm now 8 mo's post-op and down 105lbs..weight is currently at 148. I never ever thought I would lose so much weight so quick...feels wonderful! I was one of those worry warts..always thinking I would be the one the surgery wouldn't work for...boy was I wrong..*L* Another good thing is my skin isn't loose and saggy..well my belly and boobs need a little work..but having all that done in the spring. Arms..legs..face..etc all look normal. I really think that your doing everything you should be doing..and that your weightloss is great. Keep up the good work and take care!

Sounds like you're doing great! I hope I do as well as you when I'm 5 months post op. I'm 5 weeks post op and have lost 25lbs. I've been wondering if I'm losing too slowly myself. I had a doctor's appointment today and doc said I was off to a good start. Are you taking a protein supplements? What is your typical daily diet like? I often wonder if I'm eating the right things. You can email me if you like. Take care and keep on losing.
