Question:
Does the Distal Roux-en-Y cause bad odor BMs, more BMs and bad odor gas?

I would like to know the real experiences with the DISTAL ROUX-EN-Y. My doctor is recommending distal instead of proximal, but I don't want to suffer from the bad smelling gas and bm's. Please let me know what you've heard or what your experience is. Thanks so much!!!    — Nancy H. (posted on October 11, 2002)

Mine is a Medial, but to some considered a Proximal RNY. My gas and BM's smell bad! I can stank up a bathroom! And all my BM's are '3-flushers'! I guess its because of all the gas trapped in the stool that causes them to be 'floaters' and not want to go down. But this is just small stuff. The BM is over within 5 minutes (although the smell lingers a little while longer), and the gas is manageable. Even with these side-effects, it is SO worth it!!

I had distal rny, 5 feet of intestine bypassed. With the exception of BM's the first couple of weeks I have had no problems with gas or BM's.

Mine smell a LOT worse than pre-op. And I didn't start having these side-effects until about 8 months post-op.

I haven't had any problems at all. I had 5' 8" bypassed.

I am very, very distal. Only 40" common channel. The first year or so, I had lots of gas, but it has faded with time. IF I eat chili or cabbage, well, yes, it makes me wish my ex was still alive, so I could take revenge. LOL! There's no hiding the fact that the BM's are worse than anything. It doesn't delight me, of course, but there are worse things.

Does everyone understand the courtesy flush? Sometimes at work I don't think so! Because they don't do it! I do and like another poster sometimes it takes 3 flushes....Courtesy flush is when you flush as you pass a bowel movement...the offending object(s) is gone, the odor is gone (almost) and there is no offending "music" to the ears. I wish more people would use a courtesy flush at my workplace. I also took it upon myself to leave several cans of cheap air spray in each stall at work. They cost $1 at Dollar General and I can relax. This is a funny question but real. So it is important to talk about it.

If the smell is really bad, I've always lit a match and blown it out, and the smell is all gone, works better than some sprays...

Well, am not sure what the difference is between the two but I had gas before surgery and it is awful after and I do have smelly bm's half the time. Am not sure if the type of surgery is the reason or not. I can't seem to remember the gas ex type pills but it would be so expensive that I just don't bother. Fortunately, I don't seem to embarass myself to bad in public.
