Question:
What Protein do you like?

Hi! I'm about 3 weeks post-op and I have diet questions. How much protein and carbs should I have in a day. What source do you like for your protein supplement? I know all our tastes are different. Where do you buy your protein supplement? What do you normally eat in a day? When you are away from the house, what and how do you eat? I had just had morphine when the nutritionist came in. She gave me a sheet of what to eat but it did not list how much protein and it listed alot of carbs. Also, I asked her about protein drinks and she told me not to do them. Would appreciate any help during this confusing time. I've lost 25 pounds so far and the weight is coming off slower now. I have about another 100 lbs to lose. — Sharon M. I tried many protein drinks and find that I tolerate Baritec the best. It has no chalky flavor and mixes like chocolate milk. My surgeon requires me to have 60 plus grams of protein a day. I enjoy my protein shake either mid day or at night as a treat. The powder and be mixed with pudding or vanilla yogurt for a real treat and even warms as hot chocolate. I also have tried those Detour bars recently and must confess that they are outstanding. A little to good and make me nervous! I did order a box from Mr Protein online with free shipping. I feel almost guilty when I'm eating them!!! When I go out to eat I either or an appetizer like shrimp cocktail or stuff mushrooms or a regular meal and ask the waitress to bring a take out box immediately so I can maintain my portion control. I do find that since my SLD I can eat just a little more and will pick at my plate even though I am full. If I don't put it into the box my hubby takes the plate and gives it to the next passing waitress! And just shakes his finger at me LOL

At 3 weeks out, your doctor probably has you on pureed/mushy foods at this point. I am one month out and will be on pureed foods for another month yet. I can't tolerate any of the protein drinks I've tried so far, and my doctor said just to get in whatever protein I can in my diet and strive for the 60 grams per day, even though I can't eat that much yet. I currently get in about 40 grams per day and eat protein-rich foods like: scrambled egg with low-fat shredded cheddar cheese sprinkled on top, tuna mixed with a little mayo and onion, chicken salad, broiled or baked fish filet, egg salad, ham salad, anything you can shread up into tiny pieces and goes down smoothly. You don't wanna eat things like steak and pork chops and things like that which are harder to digest just yet. You may want to keep track of how much protein and carbs you're getting in per day using www.fitday.com. Its an awesome site that has really helped me see exactly what is in each food. Good luck to you!

I use ProScore 100 choc & Stack choc for my first choices. I use ProBlend 55 choc & van mixed, or PB55 van + diet root beer. I use 2 collagen types, but only once/day. I use the whey products 5-6-7-8 drinks per day (30g each). I don't count food proteins toward my total at all.

I use EPN Chocolate flavor. I mix it with 1 cup of skim milk. To me it tastes like cold chocolate (instead of hot chocolate). They have vanilla (don't like that one) and strawberry (too sweet for me) too. They have 18 grams of protein for 1 scoop and you can mix it with water as well. The carb count and sugar counts are low as well and the price is better than some of the others I've tried. I just tried a brand that some people tout on and it was gross to me. I should know if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I'll stick to my EPN Whey Protein powder. Their website is e-p-n.com good luck to you

I like Real Meals. It has 60 grams of protein (split into two mini shakes a day because we can only absorb 30 grams at a time) It is also one of the few supplements made with 100% whey protein and whey peptides. The peptides cause 100% immediate absorbtion. Go to www.protein-solution.com for more information. And there is a recipe page there with 30 protein shake recipes. For answers to the rest of the questions you should find all of the answers in my profile. Email me if you have any more.

I found that early on I could only tolerate sugar free instant carnation breakfast or Herbalifes peach-mango and wildberry. Now at 6 months I do 2 real meals shakes a day. That's 60 grams of protein. The vanilla one tastes good with crushed ice, 1/4 tsp sf tang powder and 4 oz of milk, the chocolate one is great with crushed ice, 4 oz of milk and 1/4 of a banana. Good luck, it takes time to find what you like, until then, try samples.

I really encourage you to order samples from anywhere that has them. I find that I have tried many and like very few. I don't like Real Meals at all, in fact just the taste made me nauseous and I couldn't get them down. I also used to be a big fan of a lot of chocolate protein drinks and since surgery cannot tolerate them. I thought that Isopure Dutch Chocolate was one of the best protein drinks I ever tasted (made with skim milk and add a dash of instant SF chocolate pudding) and now I simply cannot get it down even though I still like the taste. I've had to go to the lighter tasting drinks which is the fruit flavored ones. I like berry mixes because they seem light to me (not thick like the vanilla/chocolate ones). I mix and match them. For example I'll mix some SciFit Raspberry Delight with Isopure Strawberry. I also like ProLab Wildberry. I add some frozen fruit to these and they blend up nice like a smoothie. Another option is Designer Whey Natural because you can add splenda to it and then add your own things like frozen fruit or sf instant pudding mix to make your own flavors. I like to hear what other people drink and try many things based on recommendations from others but find that my taste is not only different from other people's but sometimes changes from week to week. I highly recommend ordering A LOT of samples.

Real Meals is the only one I have liked. And I tried them all. It also has the most protein out of any shake made so you only have to drink a small amount. The recipes they have are awesome!!!!

So far, I like Optimum 100% Whey, Double Rich Chocolate the best. I mix it in a shaker bottle with lactose-free milk. It dissolves smoothly, and both feels and tastes like a very rich chocolate milk. I figure it must be good-- my 7 year old daughter likes it, and occasionally has it for snacks.
The shake has 22 grams of protein, and the milk has quite a bit more. This mix gives me half my protein and a large amount of my calcium for the day. (The mix has 17% of the daily amount.) I have a very proximal RNY (80 cm), so I believe that 2 shakes a day gets me close to 60 grams of protein.
I supplement this protein with protein at meals (small amounts, since I can only eat a total of 1/4 cup) and high protein broth (Health Valley-- 14 ounces has 12 grams of protein). I mix the Health Valley with regular broth cubes, because the HV has no salt. You can get it fat free, as well, but for some reason, that is only 10 grams of protein for the 14 ounce can.
Good luck, Beth
