Question:
Is this a plateau or because my thyroid is not working?

I am 14 weeks post op. I have lost 77/78#'s depending on when I weigh. I have not lost anything in almost 3 weeks. I had a TSH (thyroid) blood test done last week. The normal range for the test was .3 to 5.5. My result was <.004 Could my lack of weight loss be due to the very low thyroid test result, or is this just a terrible plateau? My TSH level pre-op was in the normal range. By the way, I was told by my surgeon that this needs to be checked out. I have an appt w/PCP this Friday.    — Kimberly K. (posted on May 13, 2003)

With a TSH level test, the results are the opposite of what you think they would be. The higher the number, the more underactive the thyroid is. Therefore, a very low number such as yours, indicates an overactive thyroid. Normally, an overactive thyroid would accelerate weight loss, however, everybody is different and it definitely needs to be followed up on. Good Luck

Carolyn is right, your thyroid is very overactive. I was just diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and have been doing a ton of research. (BTW, what is considered normal range has been lowered to 3 by the experts so if anybody tests past 3 bug your doc for more tests...5.5 supposedly is considered way too hypothyroid now.)
