Question:
Has anybody gotten thrush after having this surgery?

I am three weeks post-op and have lost about 25 lbs. Today I noticed that I have oral thrush. Has anybody else gotten thrush after having this surgery?    — Paula G. (posted on July 17, 2000)

I did! I've met one other who did. I was about 5 months post-op. My PCP at the time seemed to think it was nutritional imbalance. THAT won't be happening again!

Before having this surgery I did alot of crazy things to lose weight ,one of which was just not eat for days and days. What you think is thrush may not be at all. When we cut back or stop eating ,everything in our body "ckeans itself" our mouth coats white and has a REAL bad smell because it's cleaning the buds that we have coated and killed meal after meal. Some will even take a smell on from our body cleaning it's pores. No brushing, scraping or mouthwash or baths (for the body) will stop this . It will help <smile> When it's finshed "cleaning" you will find food like never before ,which is why so many find some foods they've loved forever to not be good anymore and other food they never liked to be loved. It may be thrush , but it may be just a cleaning long overdue. Hope I've helped ,God bless.

I had thrush two weeks after surgery. It was such a bad case that it didn't disappear until I got a second type of antibiotic to kill it. If you think you have it, contact your doctor to get a prescription to help get rid of it. I didn't contact my doctor right away and tried to use antiseptic to help it (as I read in a medical book). The antiseptic only made it worse and I decided that I should consult the doctor. By having it, I had trouble getting the liquids in that I needed because of the sour taste in my mouth and my weightloss was not as good as it could have been if it was cleared up right away. Take care.

YES YES YES~~~right after surgery, i could only sleep on my back (of course) so my mouth wolud get really dry. One night, I woke up and wiped my tongue with something because it was so dry, and the ENTIRE surface of my tongue came off with the cloth, so for a while, I had a very smooth and raw tongue...very gross. I also developed a yeast infection and a yest infection in all the folds of my skin...this was very awful to go thru just a few days post op...YUCK!!!

Yes! I thought I was some kind of a freak , my doctor drew blood and said diabetics were more susceptible to it. I wasn't a diabetic( I thought) and the tests confirmed I am. I had to swish and swallow Nystatin oral suspension to clear it up. I also got a little dehydrated because everything felt and tasted nasty in my mouth.I am glad to see I am not alone.

I got some sort of bumps in the upper lip area of the inside of my mouth right after surgery. I was given an oral cream medicine, which tasted aweful, while at the hospital. It seemed to go away in about a week. I thought I was weird for getting this!!!!! Guess not, thank God. LOL

Yes I have it now, and it is making my recouperation miserable. I am 7 days post and was released from hospital 5 days post, wouldn't you know on the 6th day I developed thrush. I am using Nyastin swish and swallow and man it taste awful, just not the kind of thing a new pouch can take.

Dear im, All of us have (candida, not breadmaking)yeast all over our bodies and inside our digestive tracts normally. It is the competition of other resident common bacteria that keep them in check. When we go on antibiotics, these competitors are killed off along with the bad" bacteria, and the yeast organisms have a field day. The result is a raw, red, sore throat and mouth, with a thick white coat on top, which can leave bleeding when it is rubbed off. If overgrowth occurs in he digestive tract, the result can be diarrhea, and if in the vagina, the classic burning, itchy, white dicharge. Nystatin works for oral/digestive thrush/yeast/candida (all the same). However, it lasts longer and seems to work better if the "vaginal troche" (lozenge) is used to dissolve in the mouth, rather than swish and swallow the liquid. Lotrimin cream is for the vaginal infection (one of several choices). For a resistant infection, an anifungal pill exists called Diflucan. To aid in prevention and relief, try eating yogurt with live cultures in it (the label will brag if there in there) every day. Leave it in you mouth a while before swallowing if you have oral thush, and don't rinse you mouth afterwards for a while. Buttermilk or kefir from a healthfood store, and acidophilus milk help, too. They all work by restoring some of the good bacteria. (And you can douche with the unflavored kind--it works.) Hope this helps! Jesse

Yes, I did. I was released on a Fri, it developed on Sat and had to wait until Mon to get meds. Oh, it was so bad that I actually enjoyed the Nystatin. Anything to make me feel normal- the Nystatin worked immediately and sdid not affect my stomach. Whats funny- is at first I thought it was the Crystal Light I was drinking, then I found out otherwise. I still cannot drink certain Crystal Lights to this day!

Two more cents... I would too, leave the yogurt (with live cultures) in my mouth as it DID make it feel better. It got me through until the medicine came.
