Question:
Help!!! I am experiencing excessive hair loss! Will it ever stop???

I am nearly 5 months post op..down over 90 lbs!!! Yeah me!!! The hair loss started around 3 months...which I had expected. I started taking vitamins for my hair at that time. I didn't see any change. So, I did as the bottle instructed and took it several times a day. My hair still comes out in hand fulls!!! I did have very thick hair. But now its thin. Even my sister in law who did my hair for my wedding nearly a year ago was shocked at how thin my hair has gotten. Is there anything I can do to slow it down???? When will it stop?? At the rate I'm going, I may be bald soon!!!! Any help is greatly appreciated!!!    — bevewy (posted on September 4, 2002)

hello congrats on your weight loss - way to go!!! i lost quite a bit of hair too and it didn't really stop until around 8-9 mos post op. i know a lot of ppl use biotin but i didn't. if you are concerned you should prolly see your pcp and have him to a blood work up and make sure there isn't a deficiency of any kind going on. if your labs are normal then unfortunately the hair loss is just a result of the surgery. it should come back...a lot of ppl i know (myself included) got our hair cut to a shorter length while it was in the falling out stage. definetely check with doc (and MAKE him do labs) to put your mind at ease. good luck and take care, kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal weight: 135lbs current weight: 130lbs

My surgeon said that hair loss stems from what you were doing 1-2 months ago (I never knew that!) I, too, have lost a lot of hair. When I started to lose the hair I upped my protein, made sure I had taken vitamins, and started taking a Skin, Hair, and Nails supplement that I bought at Wal-Mart. My nails are stronger than ever and my hair loss has stopped. I am getting re-growth and did eventually get it cut. It does stop! Good Luck!
