Question:
My surgeon's diet seems strict, what everyone else's like?

I am post op 2 weeks and can only have liquids and protein supplements (shakes) until my 4 week post op visit with the surgeon. I would really like to eat something!!! Are there other plans that are not as strict as mine, and has anyone had trouble?    — Amy M. (posted on April 4, 2002)

My doctor had us start eating solid foods on the 7th day post-op. I haven't had any trouble.

Every doctor has their thoughts and ideas on the your eating after. It is best to follow what he has asked. I'm pre-op, but the doctor has given me my diet to follow and introduces food sooner then I think it should be. But I think I would have a difficult time with 4 weeks of liquid diet. Have you try cream soups? Those are more tastful and filling.

My dr was very strict too. One week of clear liquids followed by three weeks of full liquids, a month of puree, a month of soft, then regular food. While I actually only did two weeks of puree then added softs, I did try to stay within his boundries. I have a few months of ick to heal... the rest of my life to eat regular food again. I find a prefer a Dr who takes the time to give me a food plan to one who says go home and try whatever, if it makes you sick don't eat it. Good luck

I started soft solids at week 3 but I would follow your dr's instructions. It may help to have things like popsicles (ff/sf) or ff/sf ice cream bars every once in a while. They are liquid by the time you chew them up and it gives you the opportunity to CHEW which is what bothered me. I wanted to CHEW something and gum is NOT a good idea! LOL

My doctor seems kind of strict too. The Bariatric group puts out a protocol of weeks and what foods you can begin. My doctor though, only after clear liquids for the first 2 weeks, only let me have cottage cheese, yougart, 1/2 egg and protein drink until I see him at 6 weeks. The protocol allowed for a lot more food. I just figured he wanted me to have good results by practically starving me to death for 6 weeks. I have to admit though that I did have cream soup and a few bites of a plain baked potato which were on the list and I did fine. I wanted something hot. I'm in week 4 now and have already lost 30 pounds. I'm craving food like crazy but I'm not hungry and hardly eat anything except the protein drink and a few bites of something because it's not what I want. I'd love a taco right about now!

You should follow your doctor's advice. My doctor said I could start puree foods on Day 8. I very cautiously started some puree food on Day 5 because I was physically nauseated by the liquid diet. I did fine, but I was VERY careful.

Well, mine was like yours. Clears & protein until that 4 week mark. But they considered V8 part of that, so I could heat it and add some spices or have it cold. The nice thing is that it was WORTH THE WAIT. I got excellent wt loss and have kept it off.

So far, my dr. seems to be the strictist, liquids only for 6 weeks. I have cheated alittle, tb.creamed peanut butter and alittle mashed vienna sausage, but it didn't go down right so back on liquids for me, figure I'll have a really good weight loss. 19days post op and 18lb. weight loss so far. The creamed soups have been a lifesaver, very satisfing.
