Question:
WHEN DO WE START....

OUR CARNATION INSTANT BREAKFAST OR PROTEIN DRINKS? DO WE DO IT THE FIRST WEEK WHILE WE ARE ON CLEAR LIQUIDS OR WHAT?    — Gale G. (posted on August 26, 2002)

hiya you start the day you get home from the hospital. i would suggest protein mixes instead of carnation instant breakfast to start since they have wayyyy more protein. if you find you cannot tolerate (and i mean by throwing up not just disliking the taste) you can use the carnation instant breakfast and mix in 2 tbls of Jarrow's Iso Rich Soy Protein Powder which will give you 29 g of protein total (not counting milk) which you may not be able to tolerate milk post op so you might want to try Vitamite (in refrig section near soy milk), soy milk or rice milk (usually in cereal aisle) you can also get protein in liquid form at a health food store, it is collagen based but i heard it tastes pretty yucky. i get the Jarrow's online from www.vitamintrader.com good luck! {hugs} kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal weight: 135lbs current weight: 130lbs

My doctor started me on carnation instant breakfast in the hospital. I started on a protein and nutrition supplement called Real Meals about 4 weeks post op.

I'm still pre-op with a surgery date of Oct. 10, 2002. My surgeon has me on protein drinks now. One protein drink a day. I looked at the nutrition label on SF carnation instant breakfast and it is loaded with carbs. My surgeon wants us to only have 30 carbs a day post op, so the carnation would not be a good choice for me. Good luck,

I am 2 weeks post op. My surgeon has me on 1 week liquids only for healing purposes. The 2nd week I get to add my 2 protein drinks. That is nice because I get a little chocolate instead of just liquids. I will continue on the liquid and protein diet for a total of 4 weeks. This is to ensure my insides are completely healed before I introduce anything difficult for my tummy to deal with. Not only that it makes weight loss the most significant at this time. My sucess so far is: 315 lbs pre-op 287 lbs 2 weeks post op YA! Hope this helps. Good luck.

I am 11 days post-op and my surgeon started us out on Carnation Instant Breakfast in the hospital. He wants us to do it for the first two weeks. Then we progress to 4 weeks on a combination of soft foods and protein drinks.

I am taking it too, I know it doesn't have as much protein as the other shakes, but, my dtr & nutrionist aren't too keen on protein drinks, rathr have us eating it instead. But, it tastes GOOD and once you mix it with the skim milk, it si 12g of protein, plus the serving size it sooooo small, I do a double, only takes 20-30 min to drink! Good Luck (Heather post op 8-15, 21lbs)

At the Bariatric Center they have you start it the 2nd week. The first week was clear liquids, the 2nd week was full liquids. I had open rny 6/20/02 in Ypsilanti. I would check with your nutrionist. Before they release you from the hospital they should give you a schedule to follow. Good Luck & God Bless!
