Question:
Can someone please give me a six week diet post op.

I have a good surgeon but he's very bad with post-op instructions. I asked him what should I eat post-op, his reply was anything on the Campbell Soup isle. I don't have any written menus. I want to make sure I'm eating the right things. Started Monday I will be 10 days post-op and the surgeon told me to go to soft solids, but didnot offer any sample menus.    — Shirelle P. Shirelle, I can't tell you what to eat but I can tell you what my surgeon asked me to eat at that point in time. Second Month Through Fourth Month: What to Eat: Eat mostly protein. You may begin to add very small amounts of soft-cooked fresh, frozen or canned vegetables, and fresh non-citrus or unsweetened canned fruits (packed in water or natural juices). Grocery List for Months Two Through Four: Proteins: Eggs, any style; Fish (soft, moist, fresh or canned, and shellfish); Chicken (canned or fresh, moist, thinly sliced deli - no BBQ or fried); Turkey (soft, moist, fresh, canned, thinly sliced deli - no BBQ or fried); Calves liver (ewww! lol); Tofu; Refried Beans; Peanut Butter (natural style - pour off the oil); Cottage Cheese (nonfat or low fat); Yogurt (nonfat, low fat, plain or artificially sweetened); Cheese (nonfat, low fat); String cheese (nonfat, low fat); Lentil, Split Pea or Black Bean Soup; Miso or Egg Drop Soup; Small amounts of cooking spray; Small amounts of nonfat mayonnaise or salad dressing, to moisten food. Vegetables: vegetables must be boiled or very well steamed; Carrots (soft cooked, fresh, canned or frozen); Beets (soft cooked, fresh, canned or frozen); Mushrooms (soft cooked, fresh, canned or frozen); Spinach (soft cooked, fresh, canned or frozen); Squash (soft cooked, fresh, canned or frozen); Green beans (soft cooked, fresh, canned or frozen); Asparagus (soft cooked, fresh, canned or frozen); Broccoli (very well steamed, fresh or frozen); Cauliflower (very well steamed, fresh or frozen). Fruits: Fresh fruits, peeled and cored (non-citrus); Bananas (fresh). Fats: Small amounts of margarine, oil or cooking sprays; Small amounts of nonfat or low fat mayonnaise or salad dressing to moisten food. Beverages: Water (eight 8 oz. glasses daily); Decaffeinated coffee or tea (one cup following a meal); Avoid alcohol and sodas -- sparkling water is ok. Foods to Avoid: Any foods not listed above. How to Eat: Eat one to two meals a day (you must eat at least one meal each day); DO NOT force yourself to eat just because it is mealtime; Eat your meal only when hungry, and stop when you are full (don't try to finish eating everything on your plate); Do not take any longer than twenty minutes to eat a meal; Chew, Chew, Chew all food very well, and eat slowly; Do not drink water thirty minutes before, during or within 30 minutes following a meal (one cup of decaffeinated coffee or tea following a meal is ok); Always, always eat your protein first and make it most of your meal, eating vegetables next and fruits last; Season as you wish...use caution! Exercise: Continue walking a minimum of 20-30 minutes daily.

Ok, now I'm a little confused! I thought you wanted a diet for 6 weeks post-op but you're only 10 days post-op? I'll quickly list what I was told to eat for the first month post-op (much smaller than the list I just typed)! Grocery List of Protein Foods: Cottage cheese (low fat or nonfat); Yogurt (low fat, nonfat, plain, artificially sweetened); String cheese; Eggs (any style); Tofu; Refried Beans; Lentil, Split Pea or Black Bean Soup; Miso or Egg Drop Soup; Chicken (soft, moist, fresh, canned, thinly sliced deli - no BBQ or fried); Turkey (soft, moist, fresh, canned, thinly sliced deli - no BBQ or fried); Fish (soft, moist, fresh or canned, and shellfish); Small amounts of cooking spray; Small amounts of nonfat mayonnaise or salad dressing, to moisten food. Eat one to two meals a day (you must eat at least one meal each day). Foods to Avoid: Avoid foods containing fats, sugars, starch, and coarse or crunchy foods. Sorry about my confusion as to which menus you needed! :o)

I had my LAP RNY on 8/15. During the first two weeks, my surgeon wants his patients to have a minimum of 50 grams of protein per day. He suggested 4 Carnation Instant Breakfast servings (no sugar added kind) or their equivalent. We could also have Healthy Choice Chicken Noodle Soup blenderized, broth, low-fat cottage cheese. He also wanted us to have 64 oz. of water per day. That could be crystal light or other sugarfree,non-carbonated drinks. We could also do pure juice with no citris in them. Nothing with lots of acid in it like tomato juice. <br> <br> Then I was advanced to stage 2 of the diet that I'm on now. It is soft, overcooked veggies without peels, light fruit packed in it's own juice, overcooked pasta (no sauce), low-fat cheese, Campbell's low-fat cream soups, hot/cold cereals with skim milk. I stay on this one for two weeks until I get advanced again. Hope this helps.

Ok, I apoologize for being blunt but I just can't help myself. I cannot imagine going to a surgeon for a life altering surgery and then accepting the fact that "he's very bad with post-op instructions". You chose this surgeon WHY? Does this surgeon have a support group or a nutritionist you can speak to.
