Question:
What can be done 2 years out tough eating

I had bypass surgery two years ago. Since then I have always had a miserable time eating. I always feel no matter what I am eating like everything settles like a lead rock in my stomach. It causes pain and discomfort. For this I have taken in the beginning liquid hydrocodone and not pill form. I really am scared because my tolerance gets higher and higher and I feel the need to medicate more frequently. At this moment I have been out of my medicine for going on 24 hours and it is driving me nuts. Is there anyone out there who can relate or who can help?    — Mary P. (posted on February 25, 2005)

my husband went thru this a few years ago. being a nurse, I asked one of our doctors what to do. he said to get Benadryl and take it instead, then taper off the benadryl. It worked for my husband in just a few days. You can buy it over the counter. What you buy is equal to 25mg so you would need to start on two. Hope this helps.

Just to clarify, my answer was directed toward the narcotic dependancy.

Mary, First let me say that I am so sorry you are having problems eating. But let me address the hydrocodone issue first. Many years ago my husband was in a construction accident that led to 25+ surgeries and over 3000 units of blood...yes, I said three-thousand. He had been on Hydrocodone for years. His doctor told him that he had to come off the hydrocodone because it was going to "kill" his liver. Being a nurse, the doc let me "dry him out". It was very hard, but he was able to get off the Hydrocodone. You really need to get off this as soon as you can. The other issue with your eating..I am only 4 months out, but I never know from one meal to the next if I am going to be able to eat. Sometimes on the first or second bite I get a severe pain and then I have to vomit it up. You need to work with your doc on making sure that you don't have a mechanical problem. They can do an Upper GI test to see this. Good luck to you, but please please please get some help with the medication issue. Good luck and may God bless you.
