Question:
Are there any foods that your body will not be able to tolerate after the surgery?

I am having gastric bypass surgery on 9/30/02 - laproscopically (sp).    — Christine C. (posted on September 2, 2002)

First I would like to congratulate you on your decesion to have surgery. I am 3 1/2 years post-op, Everyone is different, Once you start your regular diet (approx. 8 weeks post-op)after surgery, it will basically be trial & error with what will agree or disagree with you. Just remember how important it is to take small bites, chew your food good, and eat slow. Good Luck to you.

The only thing that I can not tolerate is sugar. OR Milk in larger quantities. Everything else is OK as long as I do them in moderation and CHEW CHEW CHEW. Especially meats. Good Luck to you with your surgery.

I still have trouble with rice and tofu, and I'm more than a year post-op!

Meats, pasta, breads, milk (large quanties), greasy foods and sugar:) I know this sounds like alot. I am almost 10 months post op and it is getting more tolerable, but the meat must be ground chuck, or deli meat, or I get really sick. I peel all crusts from my breads (this helps), I can't do any pasta it really makes me nauseaous. At first I couldn't even drink 1 drink of milk, but now I can drink about 4 oz and be OK. And sugars I can eat but let me tell ya I regret it about 30 minutes later:( Also remember everyone is different so this may not be your case at all. Good Luck and CONGRATULATIONS on your decision to have WLS.

Christine, everyone is different. Most of us cannot tolerate things early on post-op and then develop a tolerance for those same things. I met a woman in my support group who was 3 months post-op and said she cannot tolerate ANY meat or seafood at all. I was eating seafood early on and meat by 2 months post-op. By 4 months post-op I could eat anything and everything. There are some foods I have to be careful with-with dense meats, I have to chew carefully and slowly, with leftover meats, I have to moisten them first. Sugars I keep to under 10 grams a serving as over that, it makes me ill. You will learn what you can tolerate or not. We're all different! Good luck to you.

This is what you can be sure of...you will find out VERY QUICKLY what you can and cannot eat. For me it was chicken, lunch meat and pasta. I don't dump, so I can eat things with sugar (unfortunately). I used to be a peanut butter-aholic, now I almost detest the tast of PB. You will find more than anything that you will begin to like foods you never liked and begin hating foods you never hated. For the first time you will be able to listen to your body and it will tell you what you should eat.

The foods I have the most problem with are chicken and pastas. Everything else goes down fine.

I eat everything. The first couple of months you won't be able to but after about three months it gets a lot better. For lunch today I had a steak and half a baked potato. I even sneak a hershey kiss every once in a while.
