Question:
I need some help with how much sugar is okay

I havent tried alot of foods because i am too afraid to dump again. Lots of people list that they drink milk, doesnt that have way to much sugar in it? How about vegetables and fruits? I am so afraid of sugar that I wont go over 5 grams and still afraid of that. Does anyone know of milk with low sugar content? I also need some info on fruits and vegies. And what about sugar alchohol in the diabetic candy? Last question, what about mixed drinks, I really wanted to go out and have a drink tonight but dont have a clue what to ask for so I dont consume to much sugar. Any response would be appreciated......    — renee J. (posted on July 28, 2001)

The lowest sugar in milk that I've heard is 11g in an 8 oz cup. I personally haven't touched milk in 7 yrs. Not worth it to me. What if....? So, I just don't. Don't drink, so I'm not up on the sugar count of alcohols. Again, not inclined to do so, because I'm not willing to give back any lost lbs. Personally, I think a good healthy fear of sugar may be all that stands between you and regain when you reach goal. Esp. casual sugars, in suaces, in milk, in "natural foods", like applesauce. I think you're wise to pick a number & stick to it. Well, of COURSE I think that. It's worked for me!

I ma almost a week post op and have been wondering the same thing. I will tell you what I have been able to drink: apple juice with 26 grams of sugar, even a Kiwi-strawberry drink with 28 grams of sugar yesterday. I asked some other post ops about this and they said that their are different types of sugars. Maybe the sugar in these two was ok. I am scared to dump, too. I had already drank 4 ounces of the apple juice, then I read the bottle and saw the sugar. So maybe you could get the lowest sugar content milk possible and just sip like an ounce or so and see. Everyones body will be different, you'll have to try and see what your bosy tells you. Listening to others I would haev believed that that juice would have made me dump. You have to taste and see, you never know. Good luck!!!!

Hi! My doc has told me not to eat anything with sugar listed in the first 3 ingredients. That includes those ingredients ending in "ose". As far as applesauce and juices go they said to get the ones with no added sugar. I have been doing this and I feel fine -- have had no problems. I don't know if this means that I would be able to tolerate sugar or not but I am not willing to try that with a candy bar or something. I just follow my doc's rules and I have been okay so far. I am 4 weeks post-op. I don't know what to tell you about the mixed drinks. If there is something that you like and they sell the mixer at the grocery store you could check out the ingredients. Personally I think I would play it safe and not get anything that has juice in it because you don't know what juice they are using. I don't drink much but I have had nothing since well before my surgery. If I do drink something I will most likely just have a beer since there is no sugar in that. Good luck and don't be afraid to talk to you doctor.

She is talking about SUGAR ALCOHOLS used in low sugar products rater than alcohol to get tipsy. Sugar alcohols are absorbed different and usually dont bother folks. Sugars in fruits vary. I am just a week post op but someone I know who is 2 years out had 3 slices of pineapple and dumped bad. They now limit to two without a problem. I suggest you try small quanties of any new food first and see if it affects you, then up the quantity. I was told that since everyone is different there are no right answers. I havent dumped yet but remember its unpleasant but in no way dangerous. The hospital gave me a regular popsicle and I didnt dump. They said there were no sugar free ones available.
