Question:
Need plateau emotional support

Hi, everyone! I know this is everybody's eternal question and it's not really a question. I just need a pat on the back. I'm almost exactly 5 months out. I've lost 92 pounds. I now weigh 179 and wear a size 12. I exercise 5 days a week for an hour and a half, both cardio and weight training. I eat really well. Occasionally I have a couple bites of dessert, but just a couple and not every day. My nurse says I'm eating very well. But, tragically, the scale has moved only 1 measely pound since January began. That's almost a whole month with no weight loss. I know I'm losing inches, though I don't know for sure how many. I've kicked up my weight training and I know I'm gaining muscle but I have no means to determine how much. I know I've shrunk a whole pant size and that my 12's are getting baggy around the back side. But I'm just discouraged that the weight really has stopped moving altogether. I'm losing hair like crazy and feeling blue. I'm feeling like I'll never lose again. I know it's entirely irrational. I was just hoping you'd all say nice things and cheer me up. I'm a bit of a bummer today. Thanks everyone! You're help is much appreciated. XOXO Jen    — jenpatalano (posted on January 29, 2004)

Hi Jennifer, This is "The Plateau Queen" here. I have had many even directly after the surgery in August. I was so bloated for two weeks post op. The inches are what counts more than anything. Most of all fat analysis. I go to curves and they weigh, measure and check fat analysis monthly. You dod not walk with a number carved into your forhead. Please try to go by how you look and feel. Baggy clothes to me are nicer than a count down on a number that really only means head game to me. Keep doing what you atre doing and the body will follow. I am losing hair like crazy too! Mary

It sounds like you are doing wonderfully. You don't mention water, but just make sure you are drinking more than 64oz. If you are losing inches then this is just a plateau and you the scale will move again. Besides, you are only 5 months out. Definitely start taking your measurements. One month I didn't loose any weight but I lost a 1/2 inch in my neck! I don't even work out my neck! LOL. You are doing great.

Jennifer, first, congrats on your dedication to exercise and determination! You ARE doing well. If you check my profile, at the five month mark I also hit a plateau. You and I were very close in pounds lost at that point too. I'm 8.5 months out now and down 126. It's been very HARD this month for me too, as I've been plateauing big time. Keep your chin up girl, it will move again soon. Hugs to you!

Hey me and you are in the same boat.. I will be five months on 2/2/04 and I have lost so far 90lbs, and since the beginning of January have only lost 5lbs, not my usual 15-20lbs... I think it's because we are so close to goal in many ways... Hang in there, and keep doing what you are doing, it'll come off....

I'm right there with you--- you sound like you're doing awesome. 92 pounds in 5 months is A LOT of weight! Your body might just be taking a break to adjust to this loss. But I know what you mean about being frustrated! Just keep up the great work-- the scale will move again.

Jennifer, you've done very well to date. Heres a pat on the back to you! I'm very impressed with your exercise schedule-geez, wish I was that dedicated. I wouldn't get upset at all if I was you. While discouraging to not see the scale move when you are obviously doing everything in your power to move it along, it happens. I suggest you just keep doing what your doing and before long, it will continue to move down.

Thanks so much, ladies! This is just what I needed. Feeling much better! Today a co-worker told me she didn't even recognize me coming down the hall. Hooray for unrecognizability and sweet people like you! Congratulations everyone! XOXO Jen

Hang in there, 5 months seems to be the point of the first major plateau. Mine happened at this time as well. I went 5 weeks without one pound lost!!! On week six I lost 7 or 8 pounds. Don't worry you'll start up again.

HEY JEN, FIRST OF ALL YOU HAVE DONE A TREMENDOUS JOB WITH LOSING WEIGHT AND EXCERCISING. I HAD FOUND THAT WHEN I WOULD CHANGE MY DIET TOTALLY AROUND THEN THE SCALE WOULD START DROPPING. AS MUCH PROTEIN AS YOU CAN HOLD, ATKINS STYLE. CHICKEN SALAD, TUNA, EGG SALAD, S/F JELLO, BACON, SAUSAGE, EGGS, OMELETS, SLIM JIMS, PEPPERONI, FISH, PROTEIN SHAKES. ALSO, THIS WILL HELP YOUR HAIR FROM FALLING OUT. I TAKE A CENTRUM ONCE A DAY AND IT REALLY HELPS ME ALONG WITH MY VITAMIN B-12 SHOT MONTHLY. REMEMBER, YOU ARE LOSING INCHES ALSO. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND BE PATIENT! ANNETTE

Jen - I went through the same thing. I went to Wal-Mart and bought myself a measuring tape (you can get them in the sewing section). I also bought a small, hand-held notebook. I went home and measured my face, neck, upper arms, wrists, bust, waist, stomach, hips, thighs, calves and ankles. I contined with the diet and excerise. The next week, I remeasured - I had lost 7 inches in one week...however, I didn't lose not 1 pound!! If it has not been for that measuring tape, I would have been very upset and depressed, instead, I was "jumping with joy"! Maybe this can help you also! Good Luck! Danette
