Question:
Do the 2grams of sugar listed on Tums' label make you dump?

I've been told that taking Tums is an excellent way of getting calcium in my diet..but when I bought the Tums I noticed the label shows 2gms of sugar, and sugar is the first ingrediant listed. Has this caused anyone to dump?    — DolcezzaVT (posted on March 19, 2001)

I have been told by the dietitian who worked with me that it takes about 15 grams of sugar to cause dumping.

It shouldn't cause you to dump. However- I have been told that the calcium in Tums is not the type of calcium we can process. We need calcium citrate. As for "why bother- when you can buy sugar free" doesn't answer the question because there will undoubtedly be some grams of sugar in things we eat. I agree with Margret that it takes about 15 grams of sugar to dump. I dumped on one tablespoon of BBQ but not on milk. Hmmm. Good luck with your weight loss!!

Cindy is right, you need to take calcium citrate. Your body won't absorb the calcium carbonate. A calcium citrate w/ vitamin D is best.

Interesting thread here! My surgeon recommends Tums because they get broken up with chewing where the calcium carbonate pills that are swallowed may pass through before dissolving. One thing I am learning from online support is that doctors have a lot of different recommendations for post op WLS. I wonder if post op treatment for other conditions varies this much as well?
