Question:
Is there a reason that this might be happening already? plateau

I had my surgery 16 days ago. The first week went very well. I lost 10 lbs. in 6 days. I have not lost anything since then. I am following my diet just the way I am supposed to. I know that hitting a plateau is normal, but is it possible this early? I am so discouraged. I don't know what to do. Maybe I just expected to much. I have read a lot of other profiles, and haven't seen this happen to anybody else. I would love to hear from anyone that may know what I am going through.    — shellkov (posted on February 6, 2005)

From about 3 weeks to 5 weeks I didn't lose a thing I got so aggrevated. But I went to the surgery board for my month and I wasn't the only one. Best Wishes and don't stress.

STAY OFF THE SCALE!!! I only weigh once a month..trust me it is much better that way. It allows you to focus on eating right and exercising and getting your water in your body! You are expecting too much and do not compare yourself to others here...everyone's body is different and will drop weight differently. To comfort you, I do know many others that have hit plateau's in the very early days of surgery. But my best advise to you is STAY OFF THE SCALE!

Hi Shelly, I am 1 year out as of this past Saturday..At 2 weeks out I also stopped loosing. Nothing to be concerned with, it is part of the process. Your body is in shock and it is just taking a break. You have put a great deal of strain on your body and it needs time to 'catch up'. People say, "Stay off the scales", Well I say " Plewy to that" If you want to weigh yourself every day do it, 2 or three times a day, do it. I did and I am no worse the wear. It keeps me in control. If I see the scales creeping back up, I back off the extra food, push more water and exercise. But right now sweetie, your body is just resting, getting ready for another big loss.......Don't worry over it so much, IT WILL HAPPEN........I stopped loosing at 9 months out. I am AT Goal and am totally happy about it. By the way, Are you eating ENOUGH right now?? You can NOT starve yourself...............it will slow down the weight loss as well. You must eat in order to loose. Just eat the RIGHT things. You should still be on your liquid foods now.....broths, popcicles, jellos......all sugar free, go to a GOOD Chinese restaurant and get some HOT and SOUR Soup and sip on it, trust me, the Warmth and texture of the hot and sour soothed my pouch and satisfied my hunger, and at 2 weeks out, I WAS STARVING !! I bought a quart of the HOT and SOUR Soup every other day and that is what got me thru the first month or two, along with the popcicles and jello, Carnation Instant Breakfast, thinned mashed potatos with skim milk............Trust me, Cindy

I am 8 weeks Post Op. I lost about 20lbs. the first three weeks and then lost only 4 lbs the following 4 weeks. I am now beginning to lose again. I was discouraged at first but then heard from many others it is just our bodies readjusting. I know my clothes were fitting differently during that 4 weeks that I didn't lose anything according to the scale. I try to take my measurements every 2 weeks to have something else to compare. Don't worry it will start coming off again. Lisa

Don't play mind games with yourself. If you are following the doctor's orders the weight lose will come. DO NOT compare yourself with others. Everyone is different! The weight will come off. Just live your life and DON'T be so consumed with NUMBERS! You didn't put the weight on overnight and it isn't going to come off overnight. You lost more weight in one week than you would have lost in a month of dieting. WE become sooooooooooo consumed with numbers. This is going to be the start of a new life for you. I'm 18 months post op and I can't tell you how great it is. You are going to have to deal with eating issues that are going to come up. Remember we spent a lot of time consuming food. Now that we can't eat what do we do with this time? I hope you have joined a support group. This is so important! Please keep in touch. We all need someone to talk to about this tuff times that will come up.

Toss out your scale! I was soooo obsessed with weighing myself that I became freaked out over every little ounce gain on my scale. I'm 6+ weeks out and have lost over 35lbs. How do I know? I weigh myself once a week at my chiropracter's office. And when those visits become less and less, then I'll only get weighed when I see him, my PCP or my surgeon. Not obsessing over the numbers on the scale has helped me to get out of the house, get my body moving and get back to the business of living life. Also keep in mind...even if the numbers on the scale don't move, your body is changing. Make sure you measure yourself on a monthly basis. That'll help you get through the (very normal) plateaus that are going to hit. Don't worry...you're going to lose weight, especially if you're sticking to your doctor's protocol! Jen
