Question:
I don't think I've ever been constipated in my life....however............

Yesterday I ate about 1/3 of cup of kidney beans with a little bit of cheese for dinner and about 2 or 3 hours later I was terribly sick to my stomach (it wasn't dumping---it happened too long after I ate). I then had dry heaves and excruciating cramps in my intestinal area for hours. I really thought that perhaps I had food poisoning or would end up going to the hospital, it was that bad. Finally I had a bowel movement and I started feeling some relief. Then I ended up taking a 1/2 of pain pill and tried sipping water...I went to sleep and this morning, while I still feel weak and little tired, I'm MUCH better. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience and whether or not symptoms this severe can be attributed to constipation. (I have to be candid and say that I'm almost 6 weeks post-op and getting my required protein is job enough, I haven't been concentrating on veggies too much, though I do try to eat at least one serving of fruit a day).    — Karen K. your doing good getting in the amount of protein you are suposed to, I know I was not doing as well as you are at this point. Make sure that you are getting in all of your water. And you may want ot add some fiber , even if it is a supplement. Good Luck to you Remember that at 6 weeks, your body is still adjusting to this whole process.

I have the same problem anytime I eat dairy. This was never the case prior to surgery or for the first couple months post-op. But now, it's totally different. It's almost like I dump on dairy, then have excrutiating gas after a couple of hours. The pain can be so bad that I can't stand my underwear to touch my lower abdomin. I certainly feel for you. You may be like me and developing an intolerance to dairy. It did take a few weeks for me to start having the problem and another couple to figure out what caused it. Don't worry though, success can be had without dairy, I've lost 140 lbs. and I reached my goal in 12 months. I'm now 18 months post-op and very happy. Don't worry too much about protein for the next 2-3 weeks. Just make sure you drink plenty of fluids when you aren't eating. I wait my recommended 30 minutes then drink constantly till the next time to eat. I also eat 6 times a day, just small portions. Good Luck and write me if you want, I'd love to help in any way I can.

I had a lot of trouble with this problem. I think getting in all of your liquid helps tremendously. But I also drink about 4 oz. of prune juice everyday and I also take 2 Fiberchoice sugarfree fiber supplement. Try that and see if it relieves the problem. I am finally pretty regular after trial and error for about a month of not getting it right. Good luck!

Well, constipation is hard stools and it doesn't sound like that's your problem. I have had the same thing happen (with nausea but no dry heaves) several times in the 18 months since my surgery. I haven't been able to pinpoint a food or other cause, it just seems that my body decides it needs to clean itself out and I have cramping and unpleasant bowel movements. It takes me about 30-40 minutes and then I am a little shaky but good to go. The good thing about this is that it doesn't happen very often (every couple months) and I can feel it coming on (don't ask me to explain how I just KNOW). It happens for me in the mornings so I just laze around that morning and plan to go to work late. I don't know the cause of this but maybe it will help to know you aren't alone! :)

my guess is the beans were the culprit. Any food that has a tendency to cause gas may do this too you. I was warned that gassy foods can now affect me ten times worse now than prior to surgery. Beans, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, eggs, milk, etc. Fortunately the only one to hit me is cabbage and milk. I've heard that beano can help, but havent tried it myself.
