Question:
What is the longest plateau anyone has been on?

On Sept 24 and as of today Oct 22 I weigh the same. This is very very frustrating. I have tried everything I can think of to break my plateau. I am 6 1/2 months postop. I had a plateau of 2 weeks before but this is unbearable. I'm beginning to think I will not lose anymore and I will be stuck at just 87 pds lost. I've been going into fitday.com and checking my calorie intake I am averaging 1000-1200 and 80 grams of protein. I drink at least 48-60 oz of water each day. I drink no diet sodas, I eat no sweets and bread. I was eating mixed nuts and porkrinds I have cut those out completely in the last 2 weeks. As far as exercise I try to walk at least a couple of times per week. I need some input to keep me motivated and to guide me somehow. Help....    — susan V. (posted on October 22, 2001)

Trying taking body measurements....I'll bet anything that even if you haven't lost pounds...you have lost inches. That's how my weight loss went in the first year. I'd have prolonged plateaus in which the scale wouldn't budge...but...I'd still lose inches. My longest plateau was about 7 weeks...it was extremely frustrating. It was weird, I lost nothing for 7 weeks. Then I lost 24 pounds in the next three weeks...I see-sawed like that for the whole 110lbs. Take it easy on your self...and don't live by the scale.

4 weeks is the longest plateaus I've had (notice I said plateauS). I lost all my weight with 3 and 4 week plateaus. Don't worry and DO take your measurements. You'll be pleasantly surprised, I'm sure! Don't give up.

I heard that when you are losing inches you are not losing pounds and when you are losing pounds you are not losing inches. So far that seems to be pretty true for me. My cloths sizes and measurments change more while I am at a plateau.

I plateaud for 4 weeks after being 4 weeks post-op, then for two weeks at 6 months post-op. My longest plateau lasted 3 months, from my one year anniversary. It was awful, and I knew I wouldn't lose more. Guess what, I did. Keep eating right, pump up your exercise if you can, and it will come off in time. Easy for me to say now at 18 months post-op, I know, but it will happen.

I just broke my longest plateau. Six weeks! The only way I got through it was to no longer think about my weight. At 10 months out, I have lost 93 pounds as of this morning, but up unitl today, I had been gaining and losing the same 4 pounds. I just decided that even if I never lost another pound (I'm still 25 pounds from my goal weight) I am still thrilled with the results. I am healthier and happier than I was 10 months ago, and that is good enough. I've decided to enjoy my new life now, not wait unitl I lose another 25 pounds. I didn't have this surgery to obsess about weight loss. When I actually got this through my head, suddenly the scale moved down almost 7 pounds! I couldn't believe it. I think getting through plateaus is about your state of mind. Try taking measurements. That is usually a pleasant surprise. Also, if it becomes necessary, THROW AWAY THE DAMN SCALE! If you don't worry about every pound, it is much easier to deal with. This is all just my experience, but I hope this can help. Good luck!
