Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had been overweight all of my life. I used food as an emotional tool. I ate when I was depressed, or had issues to deal with, pressure, etc. I had no self esteem, no pride in myself, and my self worth was no where to be found.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Getting to a place where I felt good about myself both inside and out.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Crossing my legs!! Wow, that was a great feeling being able to sit crossed legged with no problem. Being able to go past the plus sizes. Being able to participate in sports.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I found out about the surgery from a neighbor that I grew up with. She was extemely overweight and after the surgery, she was a totally diffferent person both inside and out. After trying so many diets without results, I knew that the surgery was the only answer for me. I had severe back problems (or so I thought) and went to see a back surgeon but he wouldn't operate because of my weight and referred me to Dr. Selinkoff.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I had the surgery done twice. The first time I was in the hospital for 5 days, and liked the way I was treated. The second time I was also there for 5 days, and was treated fairly, but I did have some complaints about the nurses. I would strongly suggest bringing your very comfy pillow, the essentials (i.e. shampoo, soap, toothbursh, etc.), a CD player, and whatever that makes you comfortable.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

After 6 years after my first surgery, the mesh that was put around my stomach to hold everything in place, broke and was growing inside my stomach. Dr. Selinkoff reversed the surgery to gastric bypass, which I wish I would have orginally gone with.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I had more energy that I had ever had in my life. My self esteem came quickly for I saw a difference immediately.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I haven't participated with any groups or support. I had a few issues but found comfort with friends.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have a scar from under my chest to my belly button. It is about what I expected and I am very proud of it.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I haven't lost any significate amount of weight in about a year now, but have maintained where I am at 165. I know how to lose more if needed but I am happy where I am at.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Very differently!!!!!! Being overweight you are judged to be stupid and lazy. I had a very hard time getting anyone to listen totally to what I was saying in many important situations. After the surgery it floored me that people were paying attention to me, listening to me. I was saying the same stuff before the surgery, but only when I had lost weight would they pay attention. I had a hard time with it for a while but have accepted it now.
