Anthony Udekwu , M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center

I had my first appointment for consult with nutrition management at Geisinger Medical Center on April 3rd, 2008. I must go through a 6 month program there with classes, tests, and diet before I can have this surgery.rnrnI had my Surgical Consult with Dr. Udekwu on Oct. 7th, 2008. He was very nice and very knowledgeable and experienced. I found out he does both RNY and DS Open procedure at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. now. We both discussed my options and we both decided that BPD/DS was the best choice for me. I am scheduled for my DS on Sat. Oct. 25, 2008. I highly recommend Dr. Udekwu to everyone. He did Bariatric sugery in Ohio and Texas before moving here to Central PA. He also does general surgery and trauma surgery at GMC. I will update more after my surgery about my surgery and post op care.rnrnI had a very good surgery and very good post op care with Dr. Udekwu in the Hospital as well as my post op visits with him. He is very caring and does his absolute best to keep you comfortable and to answer your questions and to keep on top of any problems or complications. He is very skilled and competent with his treatments and care.

Dr. Frezza was my surgeon until the problems in March with my attempted surgery. I have found another surgeon, Dr. Udekwu in Amarillo, although he is also with Texas Tech he seemed to really care about my issues and spent at least 45 minutes to an hour talking to me, and getting to know me. I like his office staff and was excited to hear that there wasn't a 5 month waiting list for surgery dates. I should have my surgery in late May or early June.

I WAS IMPRESSED WITH DR UDEKWU BECAUSE WHEN HE FIRST CAME TO AMARILLO BACK IN AUGUST 04 I HAD ALREADY BEEN APPROVED BY MY INSURANCE TO HAVE MY SURGERY DONE AT BAYLOR UNIVERSITY IN DALLAS TX WHEN I HEARD OF DR UDEKWU I CALLED THE TEXAS TECH SURGERY CENTER AND LEFT MY PHONE NUMBER. WHEN DR UDEKWU GOT MY NUMBER HE CALLED PERSONALY TO ME THAT MEANT ALOT. MY IMPRESSION OF DR UDEKWU HAS NOT CHANGED HE SEEMS LIKE AN AWSOME GUY AND HE IS HUMAN AND HAS A HEART LIKE THE REST OF US. HIS OFFICE STAFF IS GREAT THEY ARE ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND EASY GOING. THE ONLY THING I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT THIS SITUATION IS THE OFFICE WAIT IF YOU GET THERE ON TIME YOU STILL HAVE TO WAIT TO SEE HIM. AND ITS NOT BY HIS CHOICE HE IS JUST A BUSY MAN. BUT I LIKE TO SIT OUT IN HIS WAITING ROOM AND TALK TO HIS PATIENTS ABOUT THE SURGERY AND WHAT TO EXPECT AND COMPARE WITH THE PATIENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD THE SURGERY AND ANSWER QUESTIONS THEY MIGHT HAVE. THE AFTER CARE I ALREADY KNEW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF MY SELF I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS SURGERY ON THE INTERNET AND BEEN TO SEMINARS ABOUT IT. ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10 DR UDEKWU IS A 10+.

Dr. Udekwu is now in Amarillo, Texas, and after my initial visit with him, I was very glad I chose him (Actually, I had picked Dr. Freeza in Lubbock, but when I found out that there was a gastric bypass doctor in Amarillo, I "changed-gears". He is extremely knowledgeable about all of the procedures and their history. He kept the visit very casual and got as technical as I needed.
The staff at the Texas Tech Health Science Center in the Amarillo branch were very nice, responsive to questions, and accommodating. Anyone in this area should be aware that Dr. Udekwu is the only gb surgeon in the Texas Panhandle at the present and may find appointment dates will be several days to a few weeks.
We did not discuss the aftercare much, except that there would be followups and when I could expect to return to work.
Just using my first visit as a basis, I would rate Dr. Udekwu 10 (out of 10). I could have "pumped" him for more info, but I have researched this extensively and didn't have many questions to ask him.

Absolutly loved Dr. Udekwu, He transfered to Amarillo, in August 2004, Felt he was very personable and willing to answer any questions that I had. He is very precise and will not accept failure. I think if he had one fault it would be that he is going to be very busy in this area of Texas and I am lucky to have been kone of the first. Be prepared to have researched what your proceedure has involved... I was a little blindsidded... I had been to another surgeon(out of my networtk for insurance) and that surgeon was going to do laproscopic.... I had assumed...Dr. Udekwu was as well... He even said in my pre op visit that he would preform the abdominoplasy along the same midline insciscion... I was just so ready to finally be having my surgery and in town, that i just tuned that out. The morning after my surgery I was shocked to find out that i had the open proceedure and had a 7 inch insciscion. Still would do it all over again.... My lack of listening as well as adhesions from a previous lapro surgery would have made another lapro hard anyway.
