Dr Joya was great! He was very kind and handsom. His other Dr's that work with him were so nice and helpful. Natalie was always running a little late but got things done. Gerald was the best of them all! He was the one who set everything up. He took care of all my complaints, special needs, special flights and so on! I can't say enough good about Gerald. Overall the trip was great and I think my sister is heading down soon, so that says alot also.

Dr. Joya, along with his team, is an excellent and experienced surgeon. My first impression is that he is a warm man, intent on being a good surgeon. His office staff, including Gerald and Nicole, as well as the medical staff, were attentive and friendly. My experience in Puerto Vallarta getting the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery was great. I'm 10 days out, and I feel so good I have to remind myself I just had surgery so I don't overdo it! Dr. Joya encourages contact after surgery, for a lifetime. If you need his staff, they'll be available by e-mail or phone. Dr. Joya's bedside manner is very warm - he is very busy, so you don't see him for long prior to your surgery, but he encourages questions. After my surgery, I had so many visitors on the surgical staff (three docs!) plus the psychologist, I never felt neglected. The nursing staff at San Javier hospital were also attentive and friendly, though you really should learn a few phrases in spanish, or take a phrase book along. You're in their country, remember. :) After my release from the hospital, one of the Doctors on Dr. Joya's team visited me at my hotel room each morning until I left. You won't find that kind of care in the US, at least not where I've been. All in all, my experience with Dr. Joya and his staff was excellent, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I was really impressed with Dr. Joya in every aspect. I saw him daily. He clearly communicated with me about what was going on. He asked me often if I had any questions concerning my surgery or care. He talked about the risks of VSG. The hospital staff were also excellent. You don't get this kind of care in Canadians hospitals.

Dr. Joya was my daughter's surgeon. I was with my daughter in Puerto Vallarta. I was very impressed with the entire staff's professionalism and warm behavior. But then I was impressed with my daughter's effervescence and ability to communicate in her spanglish which delighted all the staff who attended. She is such a beautiful person. Dr. Joya and the other staff warmed up to her instantly. Did she get extra care? No, She got their best service - and that's what they offer all who come to them.rnNow I respond based on my own experience. Dr. Joya is a strong presence who becomes more nurturing as days in the hospital pass. Instead of seeing him less, I saw him more often and his eyes met mine as he examined me and he asked helpful questions and offered helpful ideas to become more comfortable. I developed an infection after a surgical complication when it was discovered I had three hernias where the laparoscopic procedure was to take place and it required some specialized treatment. Dr. Joya's professionalism did not wane as I improved. I felt closer to him. He is proud of his work and his status, and strives diligently to make each surgery a work of art and excellence. He believes sincerely that WLS offers a tool that if used correctly opens doors of opportunity for anyone. He stresses aftercare by requesting followup reports from US doctors, making sure his plan for aftercare is appropriate and he is very availabole for consultation by phone or email. I went in with second hand info based on my daughter's surgery last year, and after speaking with Dr. Joya realized that at 66 years old I was taking on a new useful tool that I was to use properly to lessen the risks. His nutritionist, Nathalie, was very instrumental in offering her expertise in nutrition, exercise, attitude and enjoyment in my new life.rnI rate the Cornerstone Hospital, Dr. Joya and his assistant doctors, and staff as excellent, for never leaving me wondering about my health or my care or my decision to get RnY surgery.Surgical competence, excellent anesthesiologist, postop bedside care and encouragement make the experience great and rewarding.

Dr Joya was very kind and professional. His staff was very attentive and caring and answered my concerns and questions fully. I traveled to Mexico and had surgery with a doctor I had not met in person prior ... this requires a great deal of research and trust. I don't know that this route is a good choice for all people... you are way outside of your comfort zone and control but for me it was a good choice.rnAftercare is more complicate because of distance so it is important to have a team in place athome. My pcp was very supportive and agreed to monitor my after care. I also have a gastroenterologist that I saw before and have seen since to have a dialation. Dr. Joya suggested an endoscopy when I emailed him regarding concerns I had about vomiting. He was right on... I had a stricture and needed to be dialated. I suggest you find local support groups or online connections to stay in touch with other postops... this is a BIG journey and not one I wouldwant to take alone. I have three friends that I can talk with that had the surgery before me. I'm going to a local support group but it is a daily struggle to eat and drink enough and get in the vitamins!
