I like Dr. Gleysteen from the first visit. He was kind and listen to what I had to say first. He went over all the information and took time to answer my questions. He gave me the advantage and disavantage of this type of surgery. He sujected that I discuss it with my family and take my time to may sure that this is what I want. I knew he was the one to do my surgery and he did a great job. After I was at home and needed information or had a concern about my condition, he did not hestiate to call me right back. This showed me how he care for his patients. He had a great bedside manner. He warn me that in a few days, I would feel that I had made a mistake, I may even curse he out, but as I heal and able to get food to stay down and get into an excerise program, those days would be faded memories. How true it is!!!!!! My experience with this doctor was great, but everyone have difference experience. I hope you have success in however do your surgery.

A very caring person, very quiet when talking.
He very much wants to keep up with your progress after the surgery. His office staff is friendly and concerned with any questions you may have.
When I had my surgery done there were 5 Doctors with him doing the surgery.Sense this is a teaching hospital, I didn't mind at all. Actually this made me feel better knowing they were there just for me. I was the only surgery patient they had that day.
The surgery takes about 3 to 4 hours.
I had never had an Epidural before because I have a form of Spinal Bifida and was afraid of having a needle stuck in my spine. They were so fast in putting it in I never felt it.
This was for pain medicine when I came out of the surgery.Everyday the team of Doctors that put in the Epidural came in and checked me. Then one or two of the Doctors that did the surgery came in and checked me. If there were any problems they immediately reported it to Dr. Gleysteen before he made rounds.I was very impressed with this.
Before I even had the surgery I used the computer and did some research and then talked to my family Dr. about it.When I went to see Dr.Gleysteen, he explained everything that could go wrong and then asked me to think about it for a week and then let him know if I wanted to have the surgery. I already knew I wanted to have the surgery and told him then.
I had a gastroplasty in 1983 which never work for me.This was a problem which further
caused complications in the surgery, but Dr. Gleysteen did a great job doing the surgery and I highly recomend him.
If I had to pick between surgical competence and bedside manner. The surgical competence would have to be the one.Dr. Gleysteen and his team of Doctors were the best and most caring I have dealt with.

My first impression of Dr. Gleysteen was that he was very nice and professional. He took all the time needed to answer my questions and to explain the procedure to me. His staff was very nice. Barbara called me to reassure me that everything would be fine. I would highly recommend him to others. The only complaint I have at this point is that it took me a very long time to get an appointment with him.

Well I went to Dr.Glysteen on Friday for my preop work. I still think he is a very nice man. My parents were with me this time and he took the time to answer their questions. He explained to me how things will go the day of surgery. I have talked to Barbara several times this week. She has been of GREAT help to me. It says a lot about a doctor when his staff is also nice and considerate. It tells me that he cares how his patients are treated. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr.Glysteen to anyone thinking about this surgery.

January 19, 2001 I met Dr. Gleysteen. He is very tall very nice and very laid back. I had heard that he had no sense of humor. I found this to be very far from the truth. He has a very good sense of houmor. His office for visits is in the Kirkland Clinic right by UAB and there are surgeons and other doctors everywhere.Later I met his office staff when I went to get the form for my diet history. Barbara is very, very nice. I called about three or four times just Friday and she never sounded the least bit upset. Dr. Gleysteen explained everything very well. Most things he explained I already knew.
He has all the information and maybe he can get BC/BS to approve.

I really liked him, he was up front and to the point about the danger of the surgery. How much weight I would lose.

My impression of him still remains the same as when I first saw him. I trust him and his staff.

His staff was very friendly and I'll have to say pretty much on time frame.

He doesnt have much of a humor. All serious about his work.

The aftercare instructions were not as well as they may have needed to be for me, They told me somethings like dont drink and eat at the same time and not to drink soft drinks because of the fizz, and eat meat in very small bites. Drink unsweeten drinks.

No aftercare program.

It was told to me by my doctor "You know you could die from this surgery, Dont you".

From 1-10 Id say about 8.

To me Surgical Competence is better, you can trust that person is not going to let you die and they are going to take very good care of you.

My first impression was that Dr. Gleysteen is a very professional man who took time to explain everything to me and answer all of my questions. The only member of his staff that I have had interaction with is Barbara and she's great. The only complaint I would have is that it has taken a while to have a date for surgery scheduled (still in process). I really like the fact that he does one patient at a time which offers a great deal of personal attention to his patients.

Dr. Gleysteen seems to be very professional and have GREAT credentials. It does take a while to get an appointment, but I think a doctor taking more time with you makes it worth it. He asks a lot of questions and explains about the surgery well. And asks if you have any questions. His secretary is extremely friendly and helpful.

Now we are getting the info together to send to the insurance company... They seem to think I won't have any problems getting approved for the surgery.

I'm scheduled for surgery November 8, 2000.

I am scheduled to have surgery on September 13,2000
My first impression of Dr. Gleysteen was set by his
staff Barbara is great and can help you with any
questions and was very helpful in getting my insurance
approval. Dr Gleysteen is a very blunt and informative
Doctor he explains in great detail both the benefits
and risks associated with the surgery. He answered
any questions that I had and made sure that I was
well informed. I haven't had surgery yet but so far I
have been very impressed with Dr Gleysteen and
his staff.

UAB surgeon referral dept. referred me to Dr.
Gleysteen but his appointment person told me that the waiting list was so long that it would take almost a year to get an appointment and referred me to Norwood Clinic
to see Dr. Henry Laws. I first saw Dr. Laws in Jan.1999.
My doctor is Dr. Henry Laws, Norwood Clinic
Birmingham, Alabama. He is very nice and explains everything well. He does a great pre-op work-up on his patients. The staff have been wonderful too. I have met a couple of patients who have had him for their surgeon and the highly recommend him. My medical doctors know him and highly recommend him too.
I was hoping to be post-op about 1 year now but, Medicare and BC/BS had lots of confortations on who should be my primary Ins. carrier and pay for my surgery. It finally ended up being BC/BS and now I have to wait again for approval.

He seemed to really know alot about this surgery and he seemed to care alot about his patients. I liked him when I first met him. He asked alot of questions and he really wanted me to know the risk of the surgery, and the payoffs. I would recommend him to anyone considering this surgery.
