Michael P. Hocking M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center

He seemed like a very nice guy.
I was less confident of him after my surgery and found that he had 3 patients in intensive care after having lacerated organs during surgery.
Very nice office staff.
He emphasizes aftercare _very_ little.
No structured aftercare.
addressed the risks of surgery alright.
he was a 7/10 for actual care. 5/10 for after care
6 overall.
both surgical competence and bedside manner are very important

Dr. Hocking was very nice and understanding. He spent alot of time with us making sure we understood the sugery. His office staff was very helpful. They were slow returning calls and sending insurance letters, but I was approved on the first letter so I can't complain.

Dr Hocking was nice and funny also. He spent a full hour with me explaning things and answering all the questions that I had.
I have been dealing with his office staff on the phone during this waiting process. They are very professional. Jenika is the insurance lady.
they are short handed in the office right now, so that has been working against me. They never return any calls to me, so I just wait a day then call them again. I am pleasant, professional but persistant.
There is a fine line between lighting a fire under them and becoming a person that they do not want to help. I try to always remember that and stay calm and professional.
8/28 They finally called me with a official and confirmed pre-op visit on Tues Oct 10 and Surgery on thursday Oct 12.
Through this entire process they have always been kind and courteous, just not as timely as I would have wished. However, they are an
extremely busy practice and are short handed
as well. I know they moved as fast as thier
resources allowed them to. But from a patient's point of view it seems slow

Dr Hocking was so great in the hospital. He did a great job on my surgery, with my incision being so small that all the nurses and doctors wanted to see it. He came to see me twice a day the whole time I was in , even on the weekend. I ahd a problem at home and I called the office and he personally called me back just a little while ago. I am so happy I chose him, and would recommend him to anyone.

Dr Hocking is very professional and answered every question I can think off. His newly revised staff is great! He used to have an assistant named David who was an interm from the University. It all started in the middle of July. My primary doctor approved me to see Hocking and sent the referrel to his office. Called Hocking's office and spoke with his assitant David. He said he got the referrel, a week later he said he never heard of me. This David guy was the only person you can talk to, to schedule an appointment with Hocking. This guy only worked 3 days a week from 1pm - 5pm and everytime you called he was out of the office. I called Hockings office every day 3 sometimes 5 times a day for 2 weeks and got nowhere. When you did speak with his assitant David he would say he would call you back. But you would never get a call back. Finally I told them I must speak with hocking. They gave me his email address. I emailed him and got a call back within hours. They scheduled a consult within a week from the email. When I went to the consult the wait wasn't long at all. I was called right on time. What was strange was he had another interm at the university come in and ask me a bunch of questions, like what diets I have tried and so on. I felt these questions should have been directly quoted to Hocking. Then Dr. Hocking came in. Answered all my questions very good and very precise. When he talked about the surgery he made it very easy to understand and drew it out on sheet of paper. What worried me was when I asked him how soon can I have the surgery he said something about how he is not really an employee of Shands hospital but an employee of the University of Florida, and then he said that he gets paid salary and not by the surgery like private doctors do. He didn't sound so enthused about giving the surgery. But he is very professional, and experienced. When I left the consult he said that he would write up a letter to my insurance company and send it in a week or so. He then said that they sometimes take a couple months to approve it and that he was booked with surgerys for the next 4 months.. So, I am thinking that I am not going to have this surgery at least until Feburary 2001. I waited 5 weeks and called my Insurance company. They never recieved a letter from Hockings office, "if this tells you anthing about his staff!" I called his office, he has a new assistant now, her name is Jenica. She told me that she would call the insurance company and have things sorted out. I got a call from her the next day with the operation date. I was shocked to here that the surgery was only a month away. So, I guess to parpharse the above.. He had a bad staff "DAVID" but now his new assistant or staff seems to be very good. Did I mention Margret? She is wonderfull. Jenika and her pack a good team. I will add more when I have the pre op and the surgery. Pre Op is scheduled a day before the surgery on Oct 17.

My surgeon was Dr. Hocking of Gainesville, he was incredible. When I went for my consultation in July, my husband and I both felt at ease with him. He answers all questions and is so sensitive to your emotions.
On the day of surgery, he came to see me as we were getting me prepped and he assured me that my whole life was about to change. His kind words meant a lot considering I was terrified.
After surgery, Dr. Hocking came to see me in the recovery room and tole me and my family that it was a textbook surgery and the there were no problems. He noticed that I had a very dry mouth and asked why I wasn't drinking anything, unfortunately the nurse said I couln't have any fluids. Dr. Hocking himself went and got me ice and fed it to me to boot. He was awesome. His bedside manner was more than I ever expected.

I only met Dr. Hocking for a few minutes, while I was visiting a friend in the hospital who had him as her surgeon. He seemed to be a very caring surgeon. He actually paid attention to what my friend was telling him and seemed genuinely concerned when she had something to say. This is why when I have my surgery I will have Dr. Hocking as my surgeon also.

I went to see Dr. Hocking for my first consultation, he is a very caring surgeon. He didn't rush me asking all the questions that I had, and he made me feel completely at ease, regarding what the surgery day would be like. He really seems to care about his patients. His staff is also very caring, and helpful.

I met Dr. Hocking on August 25, 2000. My mother and I were very impressed with him. He answered every question that I had with no hesitation. I feel very confident in having Dr. Hocking do my surgery. He is a very nice man, and he seems to be very concerned with his patients. I would recommend him to anyone that I know. I am so looking forward to my surgery.
Now, the office staff is another story. I am not the kind of person to just sit back and wait. After I left the office on 8-25-00, I was assured that my paperwork would be sent in the next week. Well, I called the office and talked TO SOMEONE who said that the paperwork was mailed out on 8-30-00, and to give it a few weeks before I started calling the insurance company. WELL, I started calling the insurance co. the very next week, and come to find out, my paperwork has not been sent. The insurance co. has been on the phone with the DR.s office staff several times demanding that they fax in my information. You know, in the time that it takes the staff to explain why something has not been done, they could have dialed a fax# and faxed the very information that they are talking about. It is now 9-15-00 and they still have not faxed to the insurance co. It is so rediculous. They are supposed to be in my corner. My surgery is supposed to be for 10-5-00. I guess I won't be getting it on that date.
THESE ARE MY OWN PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS OF MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND I AM MAKING NO STATEMENT ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE MAY EXPERIENCE.

I found Dr. Hocking's staff wonderfully
helpful and and extremely nice! Dr. Hocking
was very thorough when discussing the
procedure. I really liked the fact that he
took plenty of time to talk with me. He
answered all my questions and seemed pleased
that I had done a lot of research about this
operation. Before I left his office, he gave
me his email address in case I had any
further questions. I feel very secure with my
decision of having this surgery with
Dr. Hocking as my surgeon.
