Miguel Cubano, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center

Actually Dr. Cubano did not perform my surgery. He was head of the department at the time of my pre-ops, but two of his surgical staff members, Dr. Shepp and Dr. Conception were the two who actually operated on me.
I was unaware the military performed the gastric bypass until my primary care physician recommended it. I love both Dr. Shepp and Conception. Both were spent lots of time with me, informing me of risks.
Ms. Massari, the gastric bypass nurse is awesome. I can't say enough about here. She was and still is a big supporter of me. She had much information for me and never allowed me to leave her office without making sure I knew exactly what was going to happen pre-op wise and post op.
I receieved a aftercare schedule after my 7 day post op appointment. I have it hanging beside my calander so I know when to schedule appointments for the next year.
Unfortunately, all of the GB doctors have recieved orders to Iraq, so most of the surgeries have now been delayed for 6-8 months, but I highly recommend if you are interested, get into the pathway (it takes about 5-6 months to complete all criteria) and stick with it till they return!
I love them and give them high marks!!!! The entire staff at General Surgery, NAS JAX is the best!!!

1. Very stern and wanting to see his patients success
2. No change
3. Very nice and wanting the patient to be sucessful
4. Sometimes can be too harsh!
5. See above
6. Lot and lots of emaphasizes on this support group at the NAS Jacksonville Hospital
7. Yes, Support program and 6 month pre planning program
8. Explains all the risk in detail.
9. scale from 1-10 with 10 being most would be a 10
10. Beside can be rough//surgical competence is "master"!!!!!

This guy is good! Sweet, smooth and to the point. Staff is better than any civilian staff I've encountered in Jax.
Req's: enter a 6 mos. program that includes
1. meeting with psychologist
2. meeting with exercise physiologist
3. meeting with dietician
4. quit smoking [if you do]
5. lose 10% of your body-weight
6. attend support group meetings once a mo.
All of this [including the smoking cessation] must be done through the on-base Wellness center. He tells you about the program, himself, describes the risks involved and outlines the above.
He'll tell you that you meet/don't meet the criteria, and hand you over to the woman who coordinates all of this for him and off you go!
This man is all business. He is in this for the patients and the passion. He could be out in the civillian world making a mil a year, but he busts his b*tt in the navy. He has vast passion for the work and no patience with people who don't take it as seriously as he does. Technical skills so good it's scary - definately the man you want at your back or in charge of your care.

He was very pleseant and patient. He answered all my questions. He made me feel comfortable about my choice and gave me all the pertinent info. that I needed regarding the surgery, both pros and cons. His nurse Massari handles most of the program. Their program does take 6 months and you are required to loose wt., see a exercise physiologist, a dietian, and then later I'll have to see a psychologist. At first I thought it was too much of a hassle but now that I'm half way there I can see how important and helpful this is. Their post op program also involves remaining w/the dietician and revisitng for at least 18 months. At first I had a pessimistic view of military hospitals but his support group, nurse, and he himself have been showing me differently... thank goodness.
