Ronald B. Spier, M.D., Inc. Bariatric Center

Dr. Spier performed my gastric by pass in April of 2000. I cannot say enough about Dr. Spier and his great staff. I have some medical background and I can safely say the competency and the dedication Dr. Spier has for his patients is second to none. He is the hardest working Dr. I have ever seen. He is very up front and has nothing but YOUR best interest in the fore front. He is a very thorough surgeon and explains everything in detail to you and makes himself available at any time, day or night if you need him. He takes his time and you do not feel like a number in his practice. This goes for the office staff, they are the friendliest most helpful staff you will find. You feel like you have known all of them all of your life and I appreciate that very much. I would highly recomend Dr. Spier's practice to everyone who is especially looking for a bariatric surgeon. -I had heard great review's about Dr. Spiers from other patients he has performed Gastric Bypass surgery on. rnrn- Dr. Spiers nurse is also a veteran of Gastric Bypass Surgery, eight years I believe. I enjoyed talking with her, she was able to give me alot of insight about what to expect from having the surgery.rnrn-Dr. Spiers is very upfront with explaining what to expect from the surgery. I appreciated his honesty. He did not hold anything back!rnrn-Dr. Spiers explained to me that he does have a structured post op instructions. It is up to you as the patient to follow those instructions.rnrn-Since I haven't had the surgery yet, I'll wait to rate him after.rnrn

My first impression of Dr Spier was that he understood what I was thinking. He already knew my concerns. His office staff is wonderful. It's just the 4 of them and that is the way I like it. I know to talk to Jan if I have an insurance problem. I like that. There is no insurance \"department\". The thing that I like least about Dr. Spier is that I'm going to be seeing him less and less as time goes on. I need his honesty. I think that future patients should trust him and his staff. This might be your first WLS, but he did 3 last week. Dr. Spier has perfected the way that he does surgery. He is very clear about after care. He is very clear what he wants from you. If a 10 is perfect; I think he should get a 10.

First Impressions:rnThe first time I met him, I was 16. He was very upfront about the risks and the after-effects. He was very honest in that he told me he'd rather I wait 2 years and try some other diets and methods in the mean time. I took his advice and returned when I was 18. This time, he was more willing to do the surgery and made sure I was aware of what this surgery would do to me, during and after.rnrnImpression Changing Over Time:rnIt didn't really. Except that I only liked him more. Once I was older and he could see that I was emotionally ready, he was very open and kind, even more so than when I originally met him. Very dry sense of humor, but I love that. It suits him.rnrnOffice Staff:rnThey're wonderful. They know their stuff and they don't make you feel alienated or anything.rnrnLeast Like:rnJust that, when I was 16, I thought him a little rough around the edges, but looking back, I think that was because I was 16 seeking WLS. At 18/19, he didn't strike me like that AT ALL.rnrnFuture Patients Should Know:rnHe's a bit non-traditional. He doesn't follow a cookie cutter plan for every single person's surgery. It's way more individual, I think. And some people may like that, some people may not.rnrnAftercare Emphasis:rnThere is a ton of emphasis on proper aftercare, both in diet and just in general with one's emotional health too, especially if you have a history of depression, like most seeking WLS do.rnrnAddress Surgery Risks:rnVery upfront, no holds barred. He laid it all right out there. He gave statistics for the surgeries in general and also for the ones he's done. He let me know that I could regain the weight back. Let me know that I could lose only 40% of my excess or that I could lose 110%. Absolutely no sugar coating of the process, which is a good wake up call for those who might not be quite ready for it. Could also be very alienating for those same people. I think he does it to test the patient, seeing if he thinks they are ready. Good thing though, because I wasn't ready at age 16.rnrnOverall Rating:rnI'd highly recommend him. He actually came recommended from a family friend who had a great experience from him. Even though there are huge, terrible insurance snags, he's been awesome the whole way.rnrnSurgical Competence/Bedside Manner:rnWell, I've not actually had my surgery yet. However, he seems to have very good surgical competence. His bedside manner strikes me as that blunt honesty with a dry sense of humor. Some people do well with that, some don't. Depends on the person. But I trust his knowledge in the surgery and what he's doing.

He is a very stright to the point type of Dr. and I really like that about him. He lets you know every...good and bad right from the get go. rnEveryone at his office is very friendly and they enjoy being there for you through all the changes. rnI would send everyone to him if I could... but not everyone likes stright forwardness... but for those who wants a Dr. to let you know everything that could go wrong and right. He's your man.. he will not hide anything from you. No matter how hard it might be to hear it at that time.

He is great. I like surgeons who tell you exactly the truth and don't sugar coat it. The only thing I wish was that I wish the incinsion was smaller. His staff is awesome. I don't know if I like the fact that I can't have fruit but I have to deal with it. I plan on going to the support groups soon. I know that there is one soon and I should go.

i would say that everyone agrees about Dr Spier, he is very upfront and honest, blunt, but makes you very aware of everything that you would ever have a question about. He is very educational , and I truly believe is out there to help all those in need of weight loss. His staff is very professional .

I had my first appt with Dr Spier on Oct 25, My husband and I was totally amazed by this man. He answered all of our questions, explained everything in detail. the staff is great, I was approved for my surgery Dec 13, my surgery is Dec 28, Happy New Years to me. On my second visit Dr explained about where I would be cut on and answered all questions once more. over all he and his staff is the best. Just something about Dr Spier, I feel like I have known him all my life.

I was incredibly impressed by Spier and his staff. They are kind, patient and full of knowledge. Spier seemed impressed that I had read his website, been on this and other websites and was able to list my resources, references and that I was prepared to ask questions after he let me know how his procedure and follow up would proceed if I chose him as a surgeon to perform my RNY.rnrnWhat I appreciate about his staff are the small things they provide to me, most importantly they NEVER act like I'm bothering them w/silly or unneccessary questions. They always seem so grateful that I have called and made them aware of something that they will happily follow-up for me. They remember that this is MY first time in this situation, even though it is a daily routing for them! The sweetest thing happened about 10 days after my initial consult w/Spier. I commented to Jan, the woman that sets up appointments for the nut and for my psych eval, that I really liked her ring and inquired what jeweler had designed it for her. She wasn't able to find the website right then, but said she would shoot me the web address when she did find it. Well the next weekend, I went to my mailbox, and there was a catologue from the jeweler! Jan had not only found the website, but had added my name and address to the jewelers mailing list! One has to think, \"If this is how they treat me for something so trivial as jewelry, aren't they going to be simply amazing when it comes to my health and well-being!\" I am truly blessed to have found these people.
