S. Akram Ali, M.D. Bariatric Center

Dr. Ali is a very small, quiet and stern little man. He is very business like, but friendly. He was very good about answering any questions, both before and after surgery.
He checked in a couple of times a day while I wss in the hospital, he INSISTS thats you get up and walk as much as possible while your in the hospital, which is a good thing. After I came home, he called persnally from his home a few times to make sure everything was okay.
He has been doing different types of weight loss surgery for 20 years now, so he knows what he is doing.
My surgery took longer then expected, and my wife and mother were very worried, that was the only problem really.

My first impression of Dr Ali is I wasnt sure. He is a small quiet man. I at first thought man he doesnt care about me. I dotn know how to describe it but I just wasnt sure about him. Then I attended some of the Staples for Life Meetings....he came he stayed and he answered questions, and others raved about him! I recently had my sign consent appointment and he was still quiet but was better offered me the time needed. His office staff is wonderfull and caring and on top of their job!
What I like least about Dr Ali is he is so quiet and reserved.
Future p[atients should know that he is the best thing in the business. I hve talked to many people and he comes out on top.
Dr Ali is very adamant about after care! He calls you and checks on you or you can call him if any problems or questions occur.
Dr Ali tells and gives you a print out of the risks both possiblre and reasonable of this surgery. He wants you to go into it with your eyes wide open.
I ghavent has surgery yet so I cant tell you about bedside manner for the Dr but I have faith in is competence!

He seems like a nice man, but a little blase, like he has done this so many times that he forgets that you may need or want more information. His staff and office are friendly and helpful, I don't ever feel like a pest or nuisance. Dr. Ali was good about checking in at the hospital and calling at home for a few days to see how you are doing.I found the consult with the dietician to be less than helpful, I think I knew more about what to eat, etc. , than she did. Dr. Ali does have a structured aftercare program, which he charges an additional $500 for, but this is cheap compared to some docs in the area who charge up to $6000 above and beyond insurance coverage. There are support group meetings in both Port Huron and Flint. He attends these meetings when he can. Other patients seem to have a very good opinion of him. He has been doing WLS for many years(20?) and I would rate his surgical competence as better than his bedside manner. He does seem to be a caring person, just not very talkative.

He is a very caring person.
A small problem understanding Eng.
but very slight, no real problem.
His staff is very helpfull and attentive.
He emphasizes after care and support group
very strongly.
He exsplained the oper. very well.
I would rate him with a 9 out of 10.
These are my first impressions and the
feeling I get from members of the support
group. I would encourage anyone to attend
the support groups as soon as they start
looking into the procedure, by any Surgeon,
I did and I got alot of direction from it.
Thanks, Tom.

Dr. Ali is a very small man and very soft spoken. When I first saw him I was afraid that he would be disgusted by my large size. He treated me like I was a normal person. He was very informative and answered all of my questions that I had written down (2 full pages) and never acted like any were stupid or that I was wasting his time. I'm so happy that he's my surgeon. His staff was great! The girls were sooo nice and were very caring and empathetic through all the ups and downs along the way. Dr. Ali stresses his support group. He won't perform the surgery on you until you've attended one of his meetings and strongly recommends them after surgery and he strongly recommends regular meetings with dietician and a therapist to ensure the most positive lasting results. Dr. Ali explained the risks and out of the thousands of bariatric surgeries he's performed, he's only lost one patient. Dr. Ali is very kind and I think he'll be wonderful when I'm in the hospital. Since his office is right behind the hospital, it's easy for him to come see his patients. He even makes rountine phone calls to his patients in their homes once they are out of the hospital. He really knows what he's doing. I rate him excellent and would recommend him to anyone considering this surgery. The only bad so far about my experience is the fact that Port Huron is an almost 2 hour drive from my home! Also his office is getting busier by the day. So the wait got longer and the recepts are getting busier but that didn't really affect my scheduling or anything but new patients may not like it. Dr. Ali was wonderful with answering each question and being very informative but it seemed to me in my opinion that he seemed just wait for me to ask a question before he would answer it instead of just volunteering all the info he had and then seeing if any question had been left unanswered. Maybe it was because I was sitting there with pages of questions.

Dr. Ali is a very small quiet man with very cold hands.I thought mine were cold but his were like ice.He explained everything about the surgery to me and my husband and then asked if we had any questions.I did have a few and he answered them with honesty and while looking at me,that is important to me-- to know your Dr.is talking to you.The people in the office were very friendly and they answered as many questions as I could think of.

my husband Jim & i was very impressed with dr.Ali, he does not take any chances, i had to have my cellulituis clear up & a filter put in before he would do sugery, i had open RYN on Jan.3, i had no problens with my incision,Dr.Ali, called me several times to see how i was doing. he has a fantastic support group.my husband Jim I would highly recommend Dr.Ali.Jody, his office help, was very helpful & pleaesant.i thank Dr.Ali from the bottom of my soul for giving me my life back:)P.S. dr. Ali is very quiet, but the best

1/5/00: I have changed surgeons from Dr. Marymor at BTC to Dr. Akram Ali in Port Huron. I have talked to his office and explained the problems I've had with BTC and made my initial appointment with Dr. Ali for Monday 1/8/01. *****************************UPDATE************************************************ 1/8/00 I saw Dr. Ali today and he is fantastic! He has a wonderful brochure that answers just about every question you could possibly have about the surgery, pre-op test, post-op diet, follow up care, support group, you name it, it's on there! Looking forward to having my surgery with him in 6 weeks!

Everyone at BTC seemed to be friendly and helpful. There were some things that I wasn't told and never thought to ask that I think they should have addressed. My surgery has been delayed because no one told me that Dr. Marymor requires me to be 8 weeks smoke free prior to pre-op testing, yet it is all over my file that I am a smoker.
I was so conserned about getting approved by the insurance company that I never thought to ask about pre-op conditioning. Now that I am looking on this site and seeing things like diet, vitamins, exercise, etc. I am preparing a list of questions to call and ask at this time so that I do not have any more delays. None of these issues were ever addressed, the focus was to get me approved and some post op diet restrictions. I assumed that you are fat, you have surgery. I hadn't a clue you had to get into shape for it.
I think that any future patients should look on this sites Q&A Pre-Op section and make a list a questions based on that. Getting approved by the insurance was the easy part. DON'T ASSUME THEY ARE GOING TO TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Dr. Ali and his staff are very professional but at the same time very personable. I have had 2 visits in his office so far and both were quick and to the point, yet none of mine or my husband's questions or concerns were sluffed off, all were answered thoroughly. Dr. Ali is very insistant on the aftercare and support meetings "Staples For Life" but not to the point of being overbearing. He was a nice but quiet man, and his staff is excellent. They have been very helpful in trying to help me work with my insurance company to get the surgery. Only negative thing I can say is that his office is so far away from my home and it is quite a drive, but that is with all the bariatric surgeons I have found, there just isn't any in my area...
