Well, this is my 2nd go-round with Dr. Ferrari and surgery. My first experience was in Dec'98 when he did my open VGB. That was a very good experience. The office staff were always wonderful. Dr. Ferrari was informative and seemed to have good patient relations. At this point, I have decided to see about getting a revision to RNY because I feel that my VBG has failed in someway. I am scheduled for 1/30/02 for my upper GI and then will sched for Dr. Ferrari to see what my pouch is up to these days. I am excited to see what condition my pouch is in now. Over the last 3 yrs since my surgery, I have not been back after the initial post op visits. I have had problems with vomiting after eating since the first VBG and planted in my mind that this was just a side effect of my surgery and I was just going to have to deal with it. I never called or saw the Dr. about the vomiting. I just switched to eating things that didnt make me sick like JUNK FOOD (carbs, sweets, etc). It finally hit me that my teeth were becoming damaged from the vomiting and my esophagus(?)was in danger from all the acid that comes up. I started going to a bariatric support group formed last year that met close to my home. Even though most that attend have had RNY, I have found it very informative and no see that I need to get mine revised. So, here I go again! Back to the start of the whole process! Once I made the call to Dr. Ferrari's office I was made to feel that I had not "failed" with the VBG. Everyone has been very supportive and taken the time to listen to me and my frustrations!
***UPDATE 10/2/02*** After feeling uncomfortable with the facilities Dr. Ferrari performs his surgerys at, I have decided to change Doctors. Dr. Adam Naaman will be doing my revision from VBG to RNY. I met with him and felt comfortable with his credentials and experience with revisions. Also the fact that he works out of a highly respected hospital. I have talked with and read posts of others that have/will be using Dr. Naaman and feel very comfortable with him as my new surgeon. My Cigna insurance has already been approved and I'm scheduled for Nov 20.
Dr. Naaman was both easy to talk to and answered all my questions without me feeling like I was taking up too much of his time. He was very knowledgeable about the revision surgery and has preformed many. He also mentioned the he was Dr. Ferrari's mentor with the revisions. That made me feel alot better. I go back to see him in a few days for my pre-op and have written down more questions. I was very comfortable with him and his office staff.

I was very impressed by Dr. Naaman. He is very professional, but very gentle and quickly put me at ease. I never felt put off by him and he answered all my questions.
His staff are the best, very attentive and I felt no embarrassement.
Dr. Naaman does emphasize his aftercare program very strongly. Especially the walking. And actually, it wasn't as hard as
I thought it was going to be. I feel that surgical competence and a bedside manner are great to have, but the first is more important with me. For me, Dr. Naaman and his office were wonderful, and I am so happy that I used them for this surgery. I feel very safe and trust them with my aftercare. I am really looking forward to the next year of changes. This is my opinion of this doctor and his staff, and I am sure every person's experience is different.

10/22/02 - PRE-OP VISIT PRIOR TO SURGERY
=============================================
Today I visited with Dr. Naaman for the last time prior to my surgery on Monday, October 28th. Pam, the nurse, weighed me in and I've only gained one pound since my last visit which is great considering the food funerals I've been having the past three weeks.
Dr. Naaman was very pleasant and informative. He allowed me to ask any and all questions and he answered each and every one ove them. He is very kind and intelligent and made me feel so much more at ease with having him do my surgery.
When Dr. Naaman left the exam room, Pam talked to me for a few minutes as well about female issues such as getting pregnancy after surgery and the effects it would have, and other issues such as my period and hair loss. She is very imformative and caring as well.
Afterwards I spoke with Amanda who helps coordinate all of the paperwork and my do's and don'ts. She is so kind and caring as well. As a matter of fact, everyone at Dr. Naaman's is kind and caring. I felt very comfortable, assured and know I am in good hands.
Bernie is the office manager and she coordinates payments and deals with the insurance company. She is as well very kind and caring and took the time out of her busy day to spend quality time with me not only to pay some charges but to sit and chat with me about my upcoming surgery.
One thing I would like to note that may not have much bearing on others is that Dr. Naaman is an amateur photographer and he has many of his personal pictures in his office. I being an amateur photographer enjoyed viewing his photos and was glad to get a "new" exam room just to see more of his pictures. He is not only an excellent surgeon but a great photographer as well. I think that allowed me to see his personal side of him as well.
I am confident that I am in good hands and that Dr. Naaman and his staff will continue to care for me along with my committment to my new life ahead of me.

FIRST VISIT WITH DR. NAAMAN
=============================================
My first impression of Dr. Naaman is that he is a very caring and attentive doctor. From the first moment I met him I felt that I could entrust him.
The office staff are outstanding! Each person I met. Everyone is very caring and informative.
Dr. Naaman told me to make a list of concerns that we will discuss on my next visit. The office staff sent the proper paperwork to my insurance company and I was approved on the first attempt, which I was really surprised that I would be approved the first time. The office staff braced me for a possibility of maybe not getting approved the first time but luckily I was.
I was approved for surgery on September 20, 2002 and Dr. Naaman's office called me to set a surgery date of October 28, 2002 (Monday). Amanda said she would call me on Monday to set up the pre-op appointments and other data that I will need to accomplish prior to surgery. I will most likely be meeting with Dr. Naaman again soon.

08/06/02 - I met Dr. Naaman today. I was really concerned (as in scared to death) of the surgery. His laid-back, very confident approach to this had a relaxing effect on me. I still am not ready to jump on the table and say "CUT AWAY", but it is much better. I am going to have the surgery ASAP, but still have some concerns.
10/4/02 - I am now one week post-op. Dr. Naaman is a great surgeon. He has answered every question I have asked him. When I called with a question about any medical questions, he returned my call himself.

Dr. Namaan seemed like a very quiet, focused surgeon, full of information and dedication to his skill. He gave me a brochure describing the surgery and all the risks involved. I had done quite a bit of research so I didn't have too many questions--mainly how long to plan on being off work and what happens to the cut away portion of the stomach (what was its function for the rest of my life).
I was very impressed with his office staff on my initial visit. Pam was wonderful and Amanda was full of information regarding the time line involved from that appointment forward.

Dr Naaman....
Not an easy nut to crack!
I wouldn't say he's easy to feel easy with, but then...I don't think he sees himself as the "country doctor" type!
He is short, consise, and seems to operate from a very structered style. He provides the information he feels necessary for you to understand. His time, and patience (for what he deems as unnecessary questions) is
limited. He is very precise in his approach to the procedure and in answering your questions. BE PREPAIRED!!
His office staff..."WOW"
Pam (Nurse, and seems to be the "grease" that makes the place run!)
Amanda (Seems to run office and deals with payments, scheduling, ect...)
Bernice (Insurance matters, and a "Wizzard" at getting you approved!!!)
I cannot say enough positive things about each of the above ladies!! They all proved to be warm, caring induviduals! Professionals... who made this event in my life possible, as well as bearable! A real breath of fresh air in today's world of cookie cutter, "next in line" medicine!
I cannot imagine better people to work with!!
Last, but not least...I had, and have, the utmost confidence in Dr. Naaman! He is an excellent surgeon... with refined skills in advanced techniques. I would highly recomend him to anyone!!
His skills allowed me to have my RNY done with the laparascope when I had been told by two other surgeons that "you're not even a candidate for that procedure at 540 lbs'".
I am in his debt! As far as the bedside manner...well, I'm working on him!!

My first impression of Dr. Naaman was that he is a kind and compassionate man. He answered the few questions I had and gave me a booklet to read. The visit only lasted about 10 minutes.
His Staff was very helpful and seemed just as excited as I was.
The thing I liked least was he really didn't spend a lot of time with me. He just poked around, answered a few questions and was finished.
He doesn't have a structured aftercare program. He did tell me all the risks involved with the surgery. I would rate him an 8 because I strongly believe in his surgical abilities.

I had my first visit with Dr. Naaman in July/2002 but before I even went for my appointment I brought them some paper work they had mailed me. I met his nurse Carol then and she was precious. She had to weigh me and she was so compassionate and kind about it. She made me feel comfortable about someone seeing my weight before I even stepped on the scales. Upon my first visit I met Dr. Naaman and he seemed very helpful and willing to take the time needed to answer my questions. He was thourough and to the point. However, he isn't "Mr. Personality"...although I don't know many surgeons that are. I'm praying his bedside manner is compassionate after surgery. I met Bernice the insurance lady and she was great!! She told me exactly what the process was from there and that I could call with any questions any time. And I did...it took 7 weeks for UHC to bring a reply and so I spoke with the office staff several times over the course of those weeks as I was anxious. They were ALL wonderful!! Each time I called I thought "this time they are gonna get ticked at me for calling so often" but it never happened. When I got my approval from insurance I think Bernice was as excited as me!! I give them an A+ so far!!

He was very welcoming and proffesional. He seemed to answere all my questions before I had to ask them. His front staff (at the window) ok, his nurses, insurance clerk and the others were soo nice and helpfull. They seemed just as excited about me having the surgery as I was. The thing I liked least/best about him was he was to the point, not alot of extra talk (B.S.). He made sure you understood the risks and the changes you would have to make in your life, no beating around the bush with him. His staff was more personable but he still made you feel very comfortable about asking questions and talking to him. After care is very important to him. He is big on exercise. He feel that exercise will not only help with your pain level but in the whole healing process. He made it very clear that it was important to him for me to follow his directions and if I had any concerns or questions to just let him know. Overall i feel that he is a good doctor. His bedside manner is ok, not overly friendly but he makes it clear that he will be there for you through it all.

Dr. Naaman is a great surgeon. I feel like I made a friend for life with him. Before surgery, he advised me of my best options, since I had had previous stomach surgery and what the risks were. He listened to my concerns and answered all questions I had. His staff is wonderful and makes you feel right at home. His aftercare program is a great benefit, if you follow his instructions. As far as in the hospital, I could not have asked for better care. I had major problems from the very beginning, but he did not give up on me and after seven weeks in the ICU, I was finally released. He showed his concern for me during my trials and tribulations, but never left my side. I was kept current on my condition and even when it got to the worse, he let me know he was there for me. Overall, I would say you could not find a better surgion.
