My surgery was June 14, 2014. Dr. Aceves was awesome. I had a hernia so he had to repair that first before the VSG. I was already in Mexico, instead of cancelling my surgery, he repaired the hernia and removed about 85% of my stomach. Now I am not sure what that really meant to me for long-term success but I think I have a tighter restriction than most. The reason is and I most likely am wrong is because I still can only get about 4 to 5 oz. a meal down and sometimes less. Depends on the day. Dr. Campos and Mexico Bariatric staff have been great to me. Nina, Carla, everyone. Since Dr. Aceves passing however, I’m not sure and to their credit I haven’t asked yet but I need to find a forum where I can go and ask questions that is a closed group because I am a very private person and don’t use social media for my own issues. I want to discuss something’s with other patients who are going through the same thing or VSG as I. Ok enough of that. This review is about the wonderful care of Dr. Aceves and his staff and I would recommend anyone to the new Doctors and Dr. Aceves staff any given day!! They are so professional and caring of you, the individual!

Dr Aceves did my gastric band 7 years ago and less than a month ago he did my revision to a sleeve, He was an excellent surgeon and a gentle kind human being. He cared about every one of his patients as if they were members of his family. I just heard today of his death. Rest and sleep in Jesus you beautiful soul.

Extremely professional, organized and caring. Had several conversations with him and his staff before and after surgery. Highly recommend his institute.

I can only repeat all the words already expressed by the other reviews on this page.

Dr. Aeves and his team, truly knowledgeable, caring and experienced.

Almater Hospital, the cleanest I have ever seen, in any country! And I have been in many in the US.

Surgery pre-op coordination was done extremely well. Nina, Yolonda and Carla really do care about just you.

Surgery, went amazing. Surgery Monday am, came home Wednesday afternoon.

Post-op now 14 days have lost 12 pounds.
Feeling of "giddy excitement" about my future and the journey into a healthier, happier me. PRICELESS.

I turned 24 about a month ago, two weeks before my surgery which was two weeks and one day ago tomorrow. I had my VSG done in Mexicali Mexico at the Almater hospital by Dr. Aceves. For those nervous about going to him DON'T BE. I was so scared, but I did my research and chose the very best surgeon I could find. When I got there everything went smooth as silk. Dr. Aceves and Dr. Campos (who, among other things, is also a bariatric nutritionist who has also gone through VSG surgery himself) took excellent care of us. They do a limited number of surgeries per day and keep everyone together in the hospital where everyone there is having bariatric surgery. You get to know your neighbors as you do laps around the nurses station to get your blood flowing and your trapped gas moving on out.
Everyone (The surgeons, internal medicine doc, anesthesiologist, most of the nurses and the surgery coordinators Nina and Carla) all speak wonderful English and I had no instance where I felt that I didn't understand something that was going on due to language barriers. They let you ask tons of questions and always explain what they are doing to before they do it and let you ask questions before hand if you have any (I wanted to know if having my drain taken out would hurt and Dr. Campos said no, and it didn't hurt ^_^). Both surgeons were very warm and had great bedside manner. They stopped in multiple times a day to see how I was feeling and were very supportive. Dr. Campos always seemed very warm and sincere and always accompanied his entrance to my room with a kind "How you feeling sweetie?"
It was a very clean hospital, they are moping and emptying garbage and changing your bed linens all the time! The room was private, and very comfortable with a leather couch and chair, mounted flat screen, wifi and private bathroom. The driver who takes you from San Diego to Mexicali (which is like 5 minutes over the border) Earnesto, is little bit hard to understand, but he is a super nice guy and a very safe driver. He showed us lots of really neat things (like pointing out cool shaped rocks, UFO spotter locations and even pointing out the location of a Nudist colony!) on the drive down and back.
The resort we stayed at the night before surgery was also amazing. T, way nicer than almost any I've stayed in. It had two pools, some private villas and four restaurants with amazing food. Your "last meal" will definitely be delicious, mine certainly was!
The worst part of the whole thing was honestly getting my IV put in and taken out. Honestly. I was hardly in any pain at all and they are very liberal with the pain medication there. Also I find having my blood pressure taken to be very painful and they worked with me to calm me down and eventually found a bigger cuff to use that helped ease the pain. Not everyone has this problem, but if you do don't worry they will help you out.
Two weeks and a day out of surgery and I am feeling no pain, my stitches and drain incision are healed and causing me no pain or itchiness. I'm just sip sip sipping on my protein and watching the pounds melt off. I have lost 22 pounds including what I lost on the Pre-op diet to date and I can already feel a difference in the fit of my clothes. After hearing about the experience a family member had with one of the strip mall clinic surgeons, (I couldn't believe they made her walk up stairs out of the operating room and didn't give her dissolving stitches!!) I am so so glad I decided to spend the extra money and do things right with the best surgery team and hospital around. Would do it again in a second!

I first began researching the Vertical Gastric Sleeve almost one year ago. Despite the vast difference in the cost, I had never seriously considered going outside of the United States for the surgery. After extensive research, I continually found one surgeon’s name mentioned in one positive review after another, and that name was Dr. Alberto Aceves from the Mexicali Bariatric Center.

The more I read, the more I felt Dr. Aceves was the best surgeon for this type of surgery.
Now two weeks post-surgery, I can safely say that I know I made the right choice. The entire process was a positive one, from my first contact with Nina, the patient coordinator, to meeting Yolanda and Karla from hospital administration and the many caring nurses and of course, to meeting Dr. Aceves and Dr. Campos and the rest of the team. Everyone was very helpful and took the time to explain the entire process and answer questions. From the attentive nursing staff to the multiple visits per day from the doctors, I felt that the level of care that I received was as good if not better than here in the States.

Having had a lap band placed in 2003 and removed in 2013, I received more personalized care from Dr. Alberto Aceves and the Mexicali Bariatric Center then I had in the U.S.

Even my lack of Spanish language skills was not much of a problem as all of the doctors spoke fluent English and the nurses spoke enough to get by.

I highly recommend Dr. Aceves and the rest of the staff at Mexicali Bariatric Center for anyone considering weight-loss surgery.

I had a Duodenal Switch done on 5/8/14 with Dr. Aceves. I happily travelled 3000 miles from Florida to Mexicali, because I wanted someone well experienced in my procedure and with excellent credentials. I had to self pay because my chintzy insurance wouldn't cover this procedure, though the fact that I had one of the very best bariatric surgeons on this planet, made it all worthwhile. Dr. Aceves has assembled a strong team including Dr. Campos and Dr. Beltran, and he's clearly mentoring them the way some excellent Dr. mentored him. The Almater Hospital is a full service hospital with excellent service. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Dr. Aceves has his own wing, so all the patients in that hall are bariatric patients. It was fun bonding with and helping encourage each other knowing we were all experiencing the same/similar conditions. I respect and appreciate the way Dr. Aceves has set up his business model, and how he has instructed the young men under him. He has a very strong work ethic and truly demonstrates care for his patients. If you are going to self pay for bariatric surgery, I would highly recommend Dr. Aceves. Don't you dare get some clown who has little to no experience and will probably charge you more for it. Travel to Mexico to Dr. Aceves and do so with complete confidence that you will be in the best hands possible.-Will

There are not enough good things to say about my experience with Dr. Aceves and the Mexicali Bariatric Center. I am in the medical field and wish that the USA would treat patients the way I was treated there! From the time I was picked up at the airport until I was dropped back off, I was treated with dignity, caring, and professionalism. The SURGEONS rounded twice a day - not some hospitalist that I didn't know. There was never a time that I didn't see someone mopping the floor and cleaning. The facility was the cleanest I have ever been in. All of the surgical staff was kind, knowledgeable and experts! Dr. Aceves truly has a heart for his patients and it comes out in everything he does. This was an excellent experience for me and I wouldn't hesitate going back. Thank you Dr. Aceves and your team for starting me on the journey!

The absolute best decision in my 61 years was to have the gastric sleeve procedure, I would do it over in a heart beat. From the time that I was picked up at the airport the experience was top notch. At no time did I have to wait a long time of wonder was was going to happen next. Once at the hospital the Pre-op testing was done efficiently and in a very timely manner. All of the Doctors involved came and introduced themselves and explained their role in the procedures and what would be happening. All I can say is that Dr. Aceves has a great team of professionals assisting him. Dr Aceves went into great detail on the procedure making sure that you fully understand what would take place and answers your questions. After the procedure Dr. Aceves came around daily to check in on how your doing and answer questions. Additionally The nurses where wonderful. I was absolutely 100% impressed with everything.
The after support is amazing, They answer your questions within 24 hours. I didn't expect such care and attention because I am SURE that would NOT be the case in Canada
Thanks Dr Aceves and crew, I would go back and do it all over again and have recommended this place to others.
