Carl Sunby Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

I fell in love with Dr. Sunby from the moment I met him Sept 03' - when my best friend Danna became very ill. Dr. Sunby's care for her over the nearly 4 months she was in St. Mary's was phenominal. He truelly cares about his patients.
So when I cam across his name on this site a few months later when I was looking for a surgeon I knew in my heart right then that my desicion had been made.
Dr. Sunby is very thorough. He tells things like it is. His compasion for his work is very evident.
My thoughts on the few of the other members of the Dean bariatric team are little less than posititve.
THere is a supportive support team of proffessionals there to help me along this journey. It is up to you (me) to use those tools to get to the end result. I fully plan on doing so. I can't believe that 3 months has already passed by!!

My first impression of Dr Sunby is that he talked quickly. He seemed to have a kind and caring face. As time went on I really grew to like Dr Sunby. He is a no nonesense, cut straight to the point kind of guy. I like this. He looks me in the eye and calls it as he sees it. He is a whiz with the knife and I have had no complications. I feel he is an excellent surgeon. He has saved my life.
If you are looking for bed side manner, jokes, small talk, etc. go find a friend. If you want a surgeon who is a great surgeon, Dr. Sunby is your man.
Dr. Sunby and the entire Dean clinic system is phenominal. The pre op and post op support as been unbelieveable. I have a team of doctors and health care providers who are in my corner to make sure that I succeed. I work with a nutritionist, psychiatrist, diabetic nurse, my surgeon, my pcp, and my clinic sponsored support group on a regular basis. If I fail (don't worry, I am not going to fail) , it will be my own fault

Dr. Sunby is good with the knife, but could improve his aftercare and follow through procedures. My surgery had no complications (thank God), but Sunby, has cancelled/postponed all my post-op appointments. I have not seen him since my surgery 9 weeks ago.
Also does not seem to "hear" my concerns about staples popping out, and my care after leaving the hospital.

Dr Sunby is not like all doctors, he cares about you the patient. He is a very through man and lays out exactly what he expects out of you and tells you all the facts up front. He is very quick and to the point, no fooling around, what he does is serious stuff and he is very knowledgable in his field. On my three month check up Dr Sunby was just as sweet as the first visit I had with him. The first words out of his mouth were, How ya doing skinny? That made me feel like a million dollars, that was the first time a doctor ever said that to me. His nurse Judy is truely wonderful. She was very helpful with the process with insurance and stayed right on top of things and always called back promptly. Dr Sunby is very detailed on what to expect before surgery and what he expects of you after surgery. The weeks prior to surgery I was so nervous and seems like had new questions everyday, I would call Judy with my concerns and Dr sunby would call me back the same day and answer all my questions and help me with pre-surgery jitters. During my hospital stay he checked on me and made sure that I was getting ever thing that I needed, his beside manner was great and he listened to everything I said. He knows what he is doing, I would highly recomended him.

Dr. Sunby is great. He is patient and has a great bedside manner. His nurse Judy is great and always has time to take or return my calls promptly. He has a structured plan for his patients both before and after surgery. Very competent and clear about what he expects of you. Works very closely with his colleague and has good success with both surgery and patient outcomes. I would highly recommend.
