He's a busy guy...but he gives 110% to each patient. He's a good listener and takes his patients seriously.
Dr. Devany tells it like it is, and isn't condescending. He knows how to rely on his staff so that leaves him free to do HIS job. After all, he's the head of surgery at OHSU.
What I liked least about Dr. Devany is he's so busy, I wanted to get to know him better. I was amazed when the nurses were talking about what a crack-up he was and how smart he is; commenting that his wife is a surgeon at OHSU, too and that if they had children, they'd be geniuses.
Dr. Devany treated me like I knew what I was getting into based on my research; therefore; attending post surgical support programs didn't seem to be high on his agenda for me. For others, he may recommend it, I don't know
I have my first post-op appt. on 2/23/04, I might learn more there, but at this time, I'm following the dieticians' recommendations for post op food; a physical therapist/rehab person was in to instruct me on how to get out of bed, the importance of walking, not bending over, etc. There again, he lets others do THEIR job.
Dr. Devany reiterated the risks involved with surgery, but didn't dwell on them; Since I had gone through a battery of cardio tests, pulmonary tests and had an abdominal ultra sound, he pretty much knew how I was put together; plus I had asked a lot of questions and provided him with information about my previous surgical experiences and diet experiences and an overview of how I wanted this surgery to work for me.
Overall, I would rate Dr. Devany A-1. His dedication and brilliance aside, he has great managing skills and he's backed up with a top-notch staff and facility.
In dealing with ANY medical personnel, you need to be your own best advocate. DO YOUR RESEARCH and KNOW YOURSELF...know what makes you tick, why you're doing this surgery, what your overall physical condition is and get familiar with what others have experienced. Trust your "gut" and instincts. Above all, remember that each person has different reactions to the surgery, hopefully yours will be tolerable, recovery event free, and you will reap the benefits.

I didnt meet Dr. Deveney until after the Versed kicked in on day of surgery ,so he was kind of hazy. After surgery he popped his head in for for a few minutes either alone or with his associate. I did see his associate prior to surgery, however. Dr. Deveney is very competent and very busy. It was odd to go for my 2 week post-op and not have him look at my stomach until I asked if he wanted to see it. I would think that would be standard operating procedure--but hey what do I know?? ;)

I don't need a touchy- feely doc, just a highly competent one, so if you are looking to have your hand held Dr. Deveney isnt the doctor for you. He doesnt have a structured after-care program rather assumes you have done your homework. I would rate him a 10 as a surgeon as I had no complications and was off of pain meds after 1 week (lap rny)and as far as bedside manner about a 6.

As far as office staff--nice but busy.

I will meet Dr. Deveney on June 26, 2003.
My surgery date is scheduled for July 15.

I met Dr. Deveney on June 26. My first impression was, I liked his smile. He was very busy that day, as I believe is normal for him. I had opened the door to the room I was in (it was stuffy in there) and watched his goings and comings and at one point he saw me and said Hello.
The staff is most excellent, very friendly and on the ball.
Basically he came in and and asked me if I was ready and I said yes and then he asked if I had any questions and what surgery I was having. I thought that last part was a little strange. He was with me a total of 2 min. or less. I thought that was strange also.
I know he is a great surgeon and teaches at the hospital I am going to (OHSU in Portland, Oregon.) He told me he would have no problem doing me lap. He said he had only had to open 1 person up out of 80 laps.
I met with nutritionist at the hospital for an hour on the 26th. Very informative. Then I went to pre admissions and had blood drawn, EKG, chest ex-ray and met with a anethesiologist. Everything is a go for July 15th. I will be second that morning.
Will update as soon as I get home and feel up to it.

I am 11 days out and feeling great.
I have to report what awesome surgeons Dr. Deveney and Dr. O'rourke are.
Dr. O'rouke assists in these surgerys now.
It use to be Dr. Macabee, but he has gone to New Zealand. Dr. O'rouke use to work with Dr. Patterson in Portland but is now at OHSU. He is wonderful. Very personable and they both checked on me daily. Dr. Deveney isn't too chit chatty, but that is okay with me. I wanted an excellent surgeon not a talking buddy, if you know what I mean. Anyway, my whole experience was great and I would recommend those 2 Drs. to anybody.

Dr. Deveney was factual & to the point, which I appreciated. During the consult, he was very sweet & answered all my questions! I look forward to working with him!!

His office staff was very friendly! Everybody from the front desk to the nurse practitioner, Susan - were very helpful & had great senses of humor!

There's nothing I don't like about Dr. Deveney. At this point, I see nothing negative - he's obviously very thorough with the approval process. (Got me approved the first time!!)

Dr.'s Deveney/Maccabee/McConnell require that you go to an informational session that was thorough & answered questions. They stress aftercare & the fact that your life will be changed forever after the surgery. This info session clearly addressed the risks of surgery & it was also covered during my consult.

Dr.'s Deveney & Maccabee did a great job on my surgery. I seem to be healing very well & doing fine after the surgery! Bedside manner was incredible, both came to visit at least twice when I was in the hospital, which proved to me that they really do care!

I'd recommend either doctor to anybody! They're both great!

Dr Cliff Deveney performed my gastric bypass surgery on January 7th. I myself am an RN, so I have high expectations when it comes to judging physicians. Although my surgery took place at Oregon Health Science University, which is a teaching hospital I actually saw more of Dr Deveney then I did residents. This is not to say Dr Deveney always had alot of time to spend with me, but whenever I needed extra time from him, I always received it. Dr Deveney always made me feel secure in his care and I loved his gentle manner and felt reassured with all the knowledgable and expertise he conveyed and used on me. My post-op recovery was rough, not only because I am a bit of a light-weight when it comes to myself and medical issues, but also because my body did not adjust to the anatomical changes easily. Over the course of 4 months I saw Dr Devaney approximately every 2 weeks. I also had to have a corrective procedure done 4 times post-op, but again this was due to my own bodies response, not any fault of Dr. Devaney'. I am now 4 months out, 80 pounds lighter and feeling so much better and ready to conquer the world as compared to how I felt the 1st 3 months post-op.
I would highly recommend Dr Devaney and am very grateful I chose him to perform my surgery. He is truly one of the kindest MD's I have ever known, to the point I developed a little crush on him, which is a first for me on developing crushes on MD's. {He is happily married}. Vicki, whom is Dr Devaney's post-op nurse practioner is also wonderful as is his office staff. Regardless of how many problems I had, how many times I called them and how much anxiety and tears I expressed I was never treated with anything but kindness and compassion.

I liked Dr. Deveney right away, although I must say he is MUCH too busy. Even my first post-op follow up appointment was hard to schedule, the office staff at first tried to make me wait one month for what was supposed to be my two week follow up. I said, "Is that safe?" Even though I'm a nurse, I WANTED to be seen by him before one month was up. I had studied risks/benefits of surgery myself, so I was surprised by nothing he said but really appreciated his recommendation for a Roux-en-Y over a duodenal switch in my case. I would recommend him to others, but would prepare them for the waiting to get in to see him each time. Post-op, his visits were extremely quick in the hospital, but since this hospital is a teaching facility, I had lots of residents, interns and medical students to address my daily concerns.

Overall, I have been pleased with everything. The only thing I was dissappointed with is I went in with a lot of my own info, and didn't really get a lot more from him. His staff is very friendly as is he. I recommend bringing a list of questions so you do not forget and you get everything answered. I was in the hospitial for about a week with no complications and all of the staff was wonderfull.

Dr. Deveney is professional, kind and knowledgeable. He always answers my questions and makes me feel comfortable.

His nurses/staff are excellent. All of my concerns (and they were plentiful) were acknowledged.

I still believe, because each of us know our bodies best, that we are our own best advocate and any doctor is only as good as what we can convey to them.

My first impression of Dr. Deveney was that he was very professional. He is layed back and has a great bedside manner. I also got the feeling that he loves his job. From what I hear he is head of surgery at this huge learning hospital. I felt at ease with him. I am going to have my pre admission appointment on 2/27/01.

I started with Dr. Deveny at OHSU, but we're self pay and he under quoted by 10000, and we can't really afford that.
I went to Dr. Patterson's seminar over Christmas, and was REALLY impressesed. I'm really excited for my consult next month. Her office staff (lisa) has also been really cool. Lisa has been so much help and is always so nice and upbeat when she picks up the phone that no matter how frusterated I'm getting with setting up appts. she always makes me happy. So far, so good!
One more update:back with Deveny, turns out the 10000 more was due to paperwork that said 8 days in the hospital, but on my record he put that I would probably need only 2 or3, and Patterson is going out of town over spring break, and so I get to keep my origional date!!! YEAH!!!!
