Although Dr. Deveny was not my first choice, fate made him the choice for me and I am so glad that it did. He and his nurse spent time with me and answered all of my questions and they are really a caring group. He didn't ice anything over and was frank and compassionate at the same time. I am sure I will be totally happy with my surgery on 10/16/01.

The dr. was very nice and made me feel I could talk to him. He was very willing to answer all my questions. Told me that whenever I had a questions just call. His staff were all very nice and welcoming.

Dr Deveney was very helpful and explained everything to my expectation. He also said to call him at anytime with any questions. And I have found that he will always call you back within a day or two with the answers. So far I am pleased with him, but I have only seen him once and called to ask a question once. I will inform you more as I journey into this adventure.

Well I had my first appointment today. I was very impressed. He spent over an hour going over my history and the surgery.
I have a BMI of 65 but the only co-mortality is piriformis syndrome in my hips. This is a rare problem that cause extreme sciatic pain.
He informed me that it might be a battle but that after
I see a pulminary doctor I should have no problems. Lots of problems breathing.
He gauranteed he will fight al the way with me!! We will see.

Feb 20 2001

Well I had to change to Dr. Deveney because Dr. Welker is taking a sabbatical. It took forever to get the surgeon changed and my paper work was finally submitted on Feb 15, 2001. I have not met Dr. Deveny yet. I am kinda waiting to see what insurance says. I am getting tired of the roller coast ride and I am about ready to get off. I know it is just beginning though. I feel my chances are good. A BMI of 66 is very high and I hope it happens very soon. I have become a prisoner in my own home and has spring quickly approaches I am getting very restless.

I liked Dr. Welker from the very first visit. My impression hasn't changed but I have only had one face to face visit with him. His office staff were very nice.

In my phone conversation today with him he had a nice sense of humor. He called me at home and was willing to answer any questions I had.

I was very excited that it would be a few weeks to be scheduled for the surgery. He told me that I would need a pre-op appointment with him and his nurse would call me with the date of that appointment.

Dr. Welker addressed the risks of the surgery with me at my initial appointment.

I will have to respond to some of these questions after the surgery when I have more contact with Dr. Welker.

The day before surgery was to happen It was cancelled. Dr. Welker will no longer be doing surgeries in Portland.

OHSU Dr. Deveney has agreed to do the surgery. I haven't met him yet but am very thankful he is willing to do my surgery.

My first appointment is on November 20, 2000. I was disappointed to wait so long to see him, but I have emailed him a few times already and he's given me information. He always responded to my emails within one day.

I received a referral for the consultation only, from my PCP yesterday. If anyone has info on how to talk to your PCP so they'll understand the importance of this surgery, please let me know...! He's a great PCP and I don't want to switch.

update 2/12/01:
My surgeon has switched from Dr. Welker to Dr. Deveny. I don't know him yet, but was referred to him by Dr. Welker. I have a consult with Deveny on 2/26.
