I found Emma very personable and not intimidating at all. She answered all my questions beforehand and moved me quickly through the process once she met and decided I was a good candidate

I found her to be very caring. Very friendly. And she is good at what she does. I had no complications with my surgery. She's easy to talk to and every question you have she answers it so it makes sense. I would rate her the highest score. What I thought was really cool is that after I came out of surgery she called my primary doctor and told him everything went good and that I was in recovery. That really suprised me and made me happy. If she tells you you need to loose weight before surgery. Do everything you can to loose some weight she just says that so it will be safer for you when she goes in. Follow her directions all the way she is very good at what she does.

I am waiting for a revision by Dr. Emma Patterson at Oregon Weight Loss Surgery. I have an appointment for a consult on May 25th. If she feels I am an eligible candidate, they will submit the request to my insurance, AETNA.

REVIEW of Dr. David Hall in Lubbock, TX, who did my VBG in 2001.

Dr Halls staff gave very good service before the surgery. Since the surgery they don't always return my calls. I liked the fact that the hospital handled everything. All I had to do is fill out some forms on the internet. Every time I called before surgery with questions they took as much time as I needed to explain the answers. At first I wished he was doing laparascopic surgery instead of open, now that I have done a little research, I feel open has few complications. I chose the VBG which is what Dr Hall recommends because I really didn't want to be rerouted inside, and the VBG is statistically much safer. I like how he gets his patients back on solid food before they go home from the hospital. I really like the group setting that they use prior to and after surgery. There were others there going through the same thing. There were 8 in my group, so we could all support each other. I worried about the flight home, but it turned out fine, the pain was much better by then. I think a good bedside manner is nice, but I would rather have a competent surgeon than a nice one. Dr Hall is both. He seemed to answer all my questions before I asked. One thing I didn't like is the diet. They really should go over the diet they expect you to follow before scheduling surgery. If I had found out that I can only eat 150-200 calories a day (mostly protein, no sugar or carbs) for the next 9 months I most likely would have chosen a surgen who supports a different diet plan after surgery.

Very nice and confidente. Fellow surgeon and partner were very nice too. Office staff is very helpful. Has a structured aftercare program.

Dr. Patterson was very nice and positive about my choice of the lap band. I had picked her because I knew she was doing the Lap band longer than anyone else in the area. I knew she would be very knowledgable and she did not disappoint. She was very honest about problems and mistakes made with early bandings including her own and assured me that alot had been learned in that time. The aftercare program required by her office is extensive and they really stress the importance of following through. She works in cojunction with the obesity institute located on the same floor and they communicate well with one another. After a year of care with this surgeons office I am still very happy with my decision to use this surgeon but I do not see her for most of my appointments. I can if I wanted to but when I do see her, although she tries to be very attentive I can still see that she is very busy and rushed for time. I prefer to see her PA Lisa, she is always positive, never is rushed and has very sound advice whether I ask for it or not she knows when I need it. She is who I ask for when I go for fills and my appointments that don't require me to be seen by the surgeon.

Surgery date August 2001rnLap duodenal swtich, Portland OregonrnrnFirst impression: rather crisp personality. Dr. Patterson was suprised and taken aback that I had done my research and knew I wanted the duodenal switch. \"I've never heard of patients going to their doctor and telling them what surgery they want. You'd never go to a heart surgeon and specify what procedure they should do.\" However, I think as informed consumers seeking an elective surgery, picking our surgery type is exactly what we should do! rnrnImpression changing over time: I had several surgeries with Dr. P. She did my WLS, also hernia, gall bladder, appendix, pancreatitis...an EXCELLENT techincal surgeon.rnrnOffice staff: In 2001, they were disorganized and infighting. Don't know about now.rnrnLiked least: The dislike for the duodenal switch surgery (she stopped doing it after me) Direct quote: \"I think the DS is too drastic for a FIRST weight loss surgery\" What the heck? You're expected to need more than one??rnrnFuture patients: Does NOT do the DS. Therefore I can't recommend her. However, if you are wanting/or can only get covered the RNY or band, she's a great technical surgeon.rnrnStructured aftercare: Now it is very structured from what I've heard. When I had my surgery I was told that aftercare was covered for life. However, the practice's suopport groups emphasize other surgeries so this is less helpful for me.rnrnRisks of surgery: I was told about complication rates. I personally believe the plusses of other surgery types are over emphasized and the risks/downsides of other types are downplayed.rnrnMost annoying thing: All patients were given a 24 hour PH test before surgery when I had mine. This meant an uncomfortable tube down your nose for 24 hours with a button to push when you ate. I was told this was necessary to predict and monitor relflux issues and would be repeated in a year to determine damage. I was told it was required and essential for my health. Later, I learned it was part of a study the doc was doing and once the study was over patients were no longer required to do it. This made me feel very angry and I felt it was unethical to require it of me without disclosing the true purpose. I did not have the one year follow up test for this reason.rnrnWhich is better: I would say surgical competence is much better than bedside manner or the overall practice/office.rnrnThese statements reflect purely my own opinion and are not meant to be taken as medical advice. Medically, I received very competent and appropriate care and can recommend Dr. P on that basis.

Dr. Patterson and her staff are of the elite when it comes to surgeons and their offices. I have had a wonderful experience in dealing with them.
