My surgery was performed by Dr. Gladden in 2000-2001 time. I had not complaints at first, I never saw him I always was refered to his PA. After a short time I started having severe abdominal spasms radiating to my back. NO one was available at Dr. Gladdens office to assist me due to the phone being shut off, no refering phone number. I called Dr. Higa's office, Dr. Felix's office "anyone" that could possibly help explain what this excruciating pain was. Wow... you could not even get past the front desk at these places. It was like no one wanted to have anything to do with his patients. Well....after 12 years of pain, pain meds, loss time off work, almost dieing, having every orface of my body checked. I had finally worn out almost all options. The out come would not be taken care of until February 2012, when a Wonderful battle ground of Doctors never gave up on me. It is sad when you need help and NO ONE wanted to have anything to do with his problem patients. until 12 years later, I was told... "I am sorry" I promised him I would have taken care of his patients with complications. REALLY... well you should have told the Bull Dog at your front desk that.
Sorry...I have not sympathy for his publicity good or bad. Doctors have an oath... I lived in pain that could have been fixed, if ONE Bariatric Doctor would have give a patient the time of day. NOT be so damned afraid of What the other Guy might have done wrong. Gee in my opinion.... It may have saved a few Lives as well. Maybe even a few Jobs...
My opinion... Like it or not. I have suffered for years and am not sorry for one word I have spoken.

I had my bi-pass surgery in 2000 I weighed 262 lbs (5'2"). 11 years later and I weigh 112 lbs and have had no problems or issues with the surgery. My recovery was textbook, never had any issues or areas of concern due to the procedure.
I will always give thanks to Herbert Gladen for taking me on as a patient. I know he was an excellent Dr and Surgeon and have always been upset over what happened to him. Again 11 yrs and I couldn't be happier. Went from a size 24 to size 0 and kept it off!

My first impression of Dr. Gladen was good.He seemed professional and knew what he was talking about because of all of his experience. He was very thorough, kind, patient, and answered all my questions. My impression of him never changed until after surgery.I had lots of complications and shortly after surgery he got his license suspended to perform any more bypass surgeries.I read this information in the newspaper when I was lying in a hospital bed.Can you imagine what went through my mind? His staff was always kind to me even after he was gone.He took some personal time off after they suspended his license and left his P.A. to care for his existing patients. This is what upset me.I didn't want his P.A. to care for me.She wasn't a surgeon; he was.He should have been there for me when I needed him; when I almost lost my life because of this procedure. As far as I know he still is not able to perform this procedure.I have no structured aftercare program to attend like he said I would. He did explain to me the risks of surgery prior to the operation.I understood them and was willing to take the chance to better the quality of my life. But I was never aware that I could get as sick as I did due to severe malnutrition and malabsorbtion.I've always thought of him as a good doctor until now.I'm sure that if he would have stuck around to care for me I wouldn't have to go through half of what I went through.Instead of having my surgeon care for me post op, I only had my family primary care physician to care for me (which he was still learning about the surgery himself, but he cared for me because I was dying and no-one else was there to do the job).I'm just blessed that I am here to share these thoughts with others right now.I am very lucky to be alive right now.

I had Kaiser ins and was not able to pick my surgeon. He no longer does the surgery and neither does his partner. He was involved in some bad pubicity around here, but I think he got a bad rap. He was kind of a small town doctor type and I think he was in over his head. He took alot of high risk pt that ended up not making it and I don't think he was completely to blame.

I liked Dr. Gladen from the get go. He was very informative and helpful with any questions that my husband and I had. 10+
My impression has changed, if possible, he is sooooo helpful what other doctor will give his home phone to contact him and actually call back and help. 100+
Office staff is great, helpful. 10+
You can't go wrong with him as a surgeon and doctor. It was the best decision I have ever made.
My first appointment after surgery is Tuesday. Dr. Gladen will let you know all the risks of having the surgery and not having the surgery, the final choice is yours.
Very highly rated and recommended.
His surgical compentance, bedside manner and personality is great.

My first impression of Dr. Gladden BUSY!
Over time my impression of him did not change, it was more confirmed that his man is very, very busy saving lives.
His office staff like he, to are very busy but took the time to respond to all questions, and returned calls promptly.
The thing I liked least about Dr. Gladen was the amount of face time. Not enough (but it's like that with most drs right).
For future patients I would advise you to be patient and follow instructions. Dr. Gladen definately addressed the risk of the surgery. He performs the surgery on the highest or high riskers. He did an excellent job of stressing the risks. My overall rating of Dr. Gladen would be an 8 out of 10. I think for Dr. Gladen his surgical competence is way better than his bedside manner. I didn't see him at all after the surgery for the first 2 days ( I saw his PA). Dr. Gladen is great he makes the dream of living a healthy/happy life reachable for not just the working or "well-off class" but for the low-income and medically needy persons as well. I would highly recommend him!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved him!!! He is so caring! His staff is relaxed and cheerful. Absolutely nothing to not like about him. He is the ULTIMATE doctor! He is very dedicated to his patients. There is a support group meeting set up for aftercare, but it is not mandatory. The staff was very thorough informing me of both the benefits, and the risks. On a scale of 1-10, I'd say he is a 99! It is easy to be comfortable with him in order to discuss delicate issues, plus he is a very competent surgeon.

He seemed to be a very nice man he was caring and patient and answered all my questions.. My first date was postponed and he did all he could to help me get into a doctor to have my tests evaluated and redone so that i could be rescheduled..
I have not gotten into the aftercare part yet so i can't really speak about that..
His office staff has been really good to me
there is one lady there i think she is the physicians asst that i dont really care for but that's life huh?
