On this site, it puts James Lau in Arizona. He is a surgeon in Stanford Medical Center in Stanford, CA.
I like the Dr. He seems to understand my reason for wanting the gastric bypass and I like the fact that he's streight forward in letting me know what will and could happen. When I have any questions, he answers them without hesitation.
I have Dr. Lau's email address and he told me to email him any time I feel the need to ask any questions.
Dr. Lau is a Dr. I would recommend.

He's now out of Stanford. :)
I'm very comfortable with my surgeon and the department in general.
Stanford's Bariatric Department requires patients to attend an informational seminar as part of your pre-op work-up. During this presentation you hear from the nutritionist about the realities of what you will be doing post-surgery. You also hear very detailed information on the procedures available as well as the risks involved. Open question and answer section for prospective patients and their support people.

Dr Lau was very knowledgable about my previous surgery and the options we had based on that. He was not only very caring, but also encouraging to me. His nurse, Robyn, is wonderful and very helpful. I can really relate to her since she had the RNY done and has been very successful. Dr Lau has an outlined aftercare schedule of appointments that he makes patients agree to follow. At first there was no support group set up, but they do have one now! Dr Lau went over the risks and benefits of the possible surgery choices, and allowed me to come to the decision of which choice was best for me. Dr Lau took great care of me while I was in the hospital. My surgery was much lengthier and more complicated than originally expected, and I felt so safe in his hands. I stayed in the hospital longer than expected and each day he gave me his take on the situation, but always allowed my thoughts and feelings on the mattters to be important in his decisions about my care. Of course, your surgeon's competence is paramount in choosing, but bedside manner is also very important. If you're not comfortable with the person doing your surgery, you won't be comfortable with him or her afterwards, and that is so important. You will be more successful if you trust and feel comfortable with your surgeon and their staff. I know this from past experience!!
