James Luketich Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
Very professional and knowledgeable.
Very professional, helpful.
He is absolutely the best, knows his stuff, not much of a bedside manner.
not much
Not really
Straighforward of the risks
Excellent
It's great to have both but surgical competence is by far more important. I wouldn't want a surgeon who was buddy buddy with me but was a screw up in the O.R.
Had my 1st appt with my surgeon on Friday 11/01/02. I had met Dr McCaughan at the WLS support group meetings at Latrobe Hospital and on the day that he did my friend's surgery. He is very nice, very knowledgable, and very open to any questions (including those voiced by my Mom, who went with me to the meeting, lol). His office staff was wonderful, all very helpful and great in their specialty. Surgery will possibly be in January, depending on the grief we go thru with my health insurance (if there's too much grief, I'm changing to a different insurance co). They explain thoroughly and repeatedly about the post-op care and changes in diet, and I know I will have post-op appointments with him. One bad thing - I have heard that his office in Latrobe is closing this month - don't know if it is a definite thing yet or not. I'm waiting now for my pre-surg testing to be scheduled and for a list of my pre-surg meds.
Well, my surgeon was Dr James McCaughan, but he's moved to Bethlehem PA and stopped doing bariatric surgery altogether. Dr Luketich is supposed to do the surgery now, but I haven't met him yet, so can't say anything about him. I've heard he's very nice...hope it's true!
My first impression of him, well. I was not sure what to think. That's the way I am about everyone. But after getting to listen to him, and the dietition, and so on, I think he is a very caring surgeon. I may be only 16, too young, but I have acid reflux, weight 320, and am tired of the weight. But, his staff actually treated me like a person, instead of, well, you just need to lose weight to get rid of acid reflux. Plus I am allergic to all the pills that I have been taking for almost a year. So far, every thing was mentioned about the surgery, well almost. Some things we haven't gone over yet because I haven't scheduled yet. Still waiting for the insurance. The staff dietition was a great person too. She let me know that I could eat almost everything I eat right now (except the exceptional).
His office staff:
Frannie is his scheduler. I had no problems with getting an appt. I called on July 10th and got an appt for July 31st. She was very helpful.
His nurses:
Angela and Stacy. Angela spent about a hour with me. She was so understanding. She didn't judge me or anything. I really got along with her well. Stacy is Dr. Luketich's clinical nurse. She also was a sweetheart.
Him:
My first impression is "wow, he is tall". I found him very easy to understand. He didn't use words that I won't know. He was straight forward with me. I think I made a wise choice going to see him.
Likes:
His staff is great. They call back when you leave a message. No playing games with his staff.
Dislikes:
The wait to see him was crazy but very much worth it. My appt was at 11, I didn't see him till 3. He was called into emergency surgery.
Aftercare:
He has a very structured aftercare program. You meet with a dietican before surgery. He stresses that you have to stick to the menu he provides. Two weeks liquids, two pureed foods, and then to solid if he permits.
Support Group:
He has a support group that meet the first Monday of every month at UPMC Montefoire at 7 to 8:30P.
Risks of Surgery:
He really didn't have to go over any of that with me because he was the fourth surgeon that I met with so I know all the risks.
I will let you know more as time goes on.
