James M. Kane Sr. Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.
Dr. Jim Kane Sr. is a sweet man. He is attentive, and answers every question. I had trouble with pain after the surgery, and he helped me find the right medication to help. I had questions about the Open procedure even the night before surgery, and went to see Jim Jr., and he answered all my questions totally... I understood then why I had to have the Open procedure and not the LAP. On the day of surgery, Sr. said Jr. told him of my concern, so he spent extra time sewing my up pretty... I was concerned medically more than cosmetically, but he sewed me up pretty anyway. Sweet man.. and experienced and talented. I am very lucky to have found him, his handsome son (that was the frosting on the cake), and the rest of his team. They work very well together. I would have one recommendation for the group about aftercare. There isn't much mentioned about nutrition other than get your protein, and iron pills are perscribed. I believe that we need more nutrition and a good multivitamin supplement with fish oils should be emphasized more.
I met with Dr. Kane, Sr. and he was very informative about the process. He was open for any questions that I may have had. He also discussed the criteria for LAP versus Open surgery. His office staff were very friendly and his hours were also very accomodating to my busy schedule/lifestyle. My overall rating of Dr. Kane is very very high.
Well, I had my surgical consult yesterday. I saw Dr. Kane Sr. He is a very nice pleasant man. He was very up front and saw that I had done my homework so he didn't give me tons and tons of redundant stuff. He was glad that I was near the end of my process and not at the beginning, so he said I should be having surgery soon. Then he told me what I was dreading the most--that I would not be able to have it done LAP because I was too heavy. (BIG SIGH) He says the bigger you are, the bigger your liver tends to be. So, then I asked if it would be at all possible and he said that they would need to look at the size of my liver. He called in his son, Dr. Kane Jr. (he's a cutie) and they did an ultrasound of my liver, right then and there and said there is too much FAT in the left lobe of my liver so it would be very dangerous to do me LAP. Both of them were extremely pleasant and knowledgeable about their business. Anyone I see that is thinking about having WLS, I am going to send them to this group of surgeons. They are EXCELLENT!
My surgeon is Dr. Kane Jr.,son of Dr. Kane Sr. They are affiliated with the Weight For Life Program. I found them by reading about a seminar at a local hospital. The seminar, given by Dr. Kane Jr. was excellent. It covered everything from facts about the surgery itself to how to go about dealing with insurance companies (in this case done by the Weight for Life team ) and also had former patients speak about their experiences and answer questions. After being approved by my PPO, I started the comprehensive testing required to see if I was a suitable candidate. This is coordinated by the Weight for Life Program. I visited with Dr.Kane who came highly recommended by friends and found him to be very thorough, personable and knowledgeable. He took lots of time to answer questions. I had a psycological testing done and saw Dr. Hart, a pulmonary specialist who helps to manage the after-care. He went into great detail about the complications that can occur, especially since I turned fifty in August. We also discussed the injections to thin my blood I would need to give myself at home. During the sleep test he ordered I discovered I had sleep apnea. At first all my enthusiasm started to diminish. I was scared and started to get discouraged about the surgery but I realized later how important it is to fully understand the seriousness of the surgery and the comittment on my part it would involve. I went through with the stress test Dr. Hart ordered and attended the required support group meeting despite my reservations. This was SO helpful. The first part of the session I listened to people who had already had the procedure. Then they opened the meeting for questions newcomers had. I happened to sit next to a nurse who worked on the unit that as a new surgical patient I would be placed on. She was there to prepare for surgery also and highly endorsed Dr. Kane and his team. As a former nurse THAT impressed me!! I went home feeling calm and my enthusiasm returned. I realized that I would be a member of a team of dedicated people there to try to help me get healthy. My surgery is scheduled for Nov.30th,2001 and yes, I am still nervous, but feel that I will be in good hands, capable and caring, the best I can find. Best of luck to all, those who have already undergone the surgery and those of you who are still contemplating it....
Dr Kane is very friendly and personable, he is an older gentleman with high energy. I believe he is a kind person and cares for his patients.
His staff is friendly as well and does their work without losing things.
I haven't had surgery yet so I don't know about aftercare. He discusses concerns well and is considered one of the foremost surgeons for Bariatric Surgery.
I believe a surgeon should inspire confidence in his/her patients and be able to back it up with the scalpel (sp?).
