My first impression was very good. I felt very relaxed and he answered any questions i had.He even said he tries to talk people out of the surgery if they are not 100% sure they want it. He doesn't push you in any way. He has very good bedside manners, and very easy to talk to. His whole staff are wonderful. They have never hesitated to answer my phone calls when i had a question of any kind. The aftercare is also good. They all are very friendly and very helpful.I would recommend to my family and friends.

I liked Dr. Kuhn the first time I met him. He was wonderful before surgery. rnrnAfter surgery, I really developed new respect for him. While I did not have any specific complications after surgery, I had a hard time getting back into the swing of things. Dr. Kuhn kept me in the hospital for an extra day - just to give me time to get back on my feet. I felt that he genuinely cared for me and my condition. He listened attentively and showed compassion.rnrn

I have never met such a caring and knowledgeable surgeon in my life.......and I credit Dr. Jay Kuhn with saving mine. I would give him a 10 on a scale from 1 to 10!! He was so attentive and knwledgeable and told me everything up front, and honestly. I have as much respect and love for him as I do my own family.....I don't know that I would make it to age 40 at the rate I was going pre-surgery, and now I know I have a chance because of Dr. Kuhn and his staff. I think Dr. Kuhn was extremely competent surgically, and his bedside manner was over the top!! He made me feel great......and helped me convince my mother that things would be ok! (She was so scared of me having this surgery!!)

My first impression of Dr. kuhn, was very good. He had a great smile, and I could tell that he had a good bedside manner, which was very important to me.rn His office staff were also very friendly, but you could also tell they were extremely busy.rnrnThere really wasn't anything that I didn't like about him. He was very thorough on telling me what to expect.rnrnDr. kuhn definitely cares about his patients, and tells them all the time to just call if you're in doubt of anything that you should or should not be doing. And he keeps a good aftercare program.rnrnWhen I first talked with Dr. kuhn about the surgery, he was very much up front with what the risks of the surgery was, and he also said that if he could talk me out of having it, that would be nice too, but I took my chances for a better and healthier life, and he understood where I was coming from. He is a very easy person to talk to.rnI would Rate Dr. Kuhn a 10 (from 1-10), If I had to do another surgery, (but I wont let that happen), I would definitely want DR. Kuhn to be the surgeon.rnBoth bedside manner and surgical competence are the best.

I think Dr. Kuhn was excellent. Very informative about all aspects of the surgery. Good bedside manner and very thorough. I am very glad he was my surgeon! He was knowledgable too. Wasnt in it for the money, he tried to talk me out of it the morning of my surgery saying that they would help me in any way. It was nice to know that he wasnt just into doing it to do it. He cared for me enough to say that. I had a great experience with him, his whole office staff, and the overall procedure.

Will when I started this jorney my doctor was Dr. Munchie he was a super guy but soon went to another hospital who needed him we will all miss him, Then doctor Kuhn took over I was a little sceptical at first but within are first meeting I said to myself I will be ok with this guy, he was down to the point and answered all my questions and had a great since of humor to boot might I add a handsom guy he is. The office staff was right on top of things cards where sent out in the mail always reminding me of appointments and if I had any questions to always call. The after care program is also very good someone was always ther for me, my stay in the hospital was short surgery on a Tuesday at noon and home Friday morning, did some laundry Sat. morning and was out shopping again on Tuesday. I can say the surgery was easy for me I went through it like nothing, the only thing I can tell anyone is after the surgery get up out of that bed and walk as much as you can it wil get rid of any gas you may have and give you strenght, plus it makes your doctor smile.

What was your first impression of him?
I thought he seemed very nice and very attentive. I was suppose to have Dr. Munchie and he was very quick with you and didn't really make you feel special just like you were on an assembly line.

How did your impression change over time?
I had only met him once before I actually had my sugery but I felt very comfortable with him doing my sugery.

How would you descride his office staff?
They were all great. Made sure I received everything I needed and it made going into and coming out of the hospital quick and easy.

What did you like least about him?
I have no complains about him.

What should future patients know about him?
He is a very good doctor and he cares about his patients. If you have any concerns he will sit and talk to you about them.

How much does he emphasize aftercare?
He came to see me a couple of time while I was in the hospital for the two days. And he made sure that I had all my appointments to see him after surgery. And every time I have seen him after surgery he tells me what I am doing correct or incorrect.

Does he have a structured aftercare programs?
I don't know really.

How did he address the risks of surgery?
He made sure I knew everything that could happen.

How would you rate him overall?
I would give him a 10. He was perfect.

Well my first impression of him was, he didnt really seem like he had the time for me but As I saw him a few times before surgery It got better and better and by the morning of surgery I trusted him completly.

As for the staff I was not impressed at all my first post op appointment I went in and checked in well come to find out almost 2 hours later they had not checked me in so I waited more time to see if they could "fit" me in. I was not in a good mood after that, But I tried to stay positive.

Overall I think Dr Kuhn seems to really know what he is doing and talking about. He seems like a great person but he is very busy so it takes awhile to get an apointment.

I think his surgical competence is better than his bedside manner but then agin the day after my surgery he went away on vacation so I didnt realy get to see him I think surgical competence is more important anyway!!

I found Dr. Kuhn very personable, intelligent, relaxing presence. Admittedly, I didn't grill him as much as I did his predecessor, Dr. Munshi (my original choice, but he's leaving Baystate Medical Center end of 2004). Dr. Munshi didn't have near the same bedside manner, but is an extremely capable surgeon. Dr. Kuhn was only licensed June 2003 but has assisted Dr. Munshi w/ over 150 of these operations (as of Aug. 2004), so I figure he's honing his skills with the best. He also has been involved in a couple of medical studies specifically regarding laparoscopic surgery, so seems to be above average in that vital area.
CAVEAT EMPTOR - As always, don't take any person's word for the quality of their surgeon; do your own research. One starting point is the Mass. Board of Registration in Medicine's website: http://profiles/massmedboard.org
Bernadette at Baystate Surgical Associates (nurse who handles the tons of the patients' pre-op questions, insurance approval, surgery scheduling, etc. - never mind all the post-op stuff) has been very responsive and helpful. Have heard a couple of folks say differently, but I think that's probably due to their own unrealistic expectations and not being NICE! If you treat folks well and with respect, they'll treat you well in return!
I think Baystate has both excellent pre-op support and aftercare. In fact, I considered switching to a non-Baystate Surgical program surgeon when Dr. Munshi announced he was leaving, but both the pre- and post-op support just wasn't at the same level. The multiple monthly support group meetings are awesome and I've learned so much over the past year. Friends and family members are also welcome there and, in fact, encouraged to come.
