Just called and he no longer performs the surgery and is giving referrals to a doctor in Anchorage.

Dr. Mayer has a fun, positive attitude. He has a great dry sense of humor and was able to put my husband at ease. He has followed up wonderfully with me since my surgery- he calls me! His staff is great! Very encouraging and positive. Dr. Mayer is a surgeon and doesn't operate a bariatric center. I felt he was very informative about all aspects of the surgery, but I had done my homework. If you are new to the idea of WLS you better do some investigating on your own. He is the only Dr. in Fairbanks that performs WLS and I was very happy with my decision to have my surgery in my home town. I recovered nicely at home. The care at FMH was amazing! The staff took wonderful care of me. Nurses are amazing people and we do have some wonderful nurses in Fairbanks! I would recommend Dr. Mayer and FMH to someone considering WLS in Fairbanks.

When I first saw Dr. Mayer I felt he was a kind caring man and still do. I was the heaviest patient that he had . He agreed to do my surgery and later said he lived to regret it due to all the damage I had from adhesions which were causing gangrene. What I loved was being able to have the surgery in Fairbanks and being able to return to my home and bed. Follow up was convenient too. His nurse, Heather, is very nice too. I had lots of questions about finances from the Clinic but that is where he works-not his policy. I would recommend Dr. Mayer to others.I did have a lot of complications but it was not due to Dr. Mayer. He called me many times to check on me and order medication and see me often. He was very caring.

I have a unique situation where my surgeon is married to my GP. I had made up my mind before meeting my surgeon that he would either be just like his wife who I love or be the total opposite. I was correct that he is very much like my GP. He had the good sense to laugh at my corny jokes. What I liked most about him is his honesty. Dr. Mayer is a general surgeon. He told me exactly how many times he had performed this surgery and where he recieved his training. He told me if I was looking for someone who specialized in Bariatric surgery he could refer me to someone else. (We only have one specialist in the state.)

5/23/02 Dr. Mayer was very pleasant to meet. He's not afraid of a patient with knowledge and even "quizzed me" a couple of times! Heather, his nurse is a sweetie. Although he's been a bariatric surgeon in the military, he is not looking at becoming a 'bariatric center' as he enjoys performing a variety of surgeries.
His bedside manner is first rate! He visited me three times a day. He's very soft-spoken and easy to talk to. For me, surgical competence is much more important than beside manner...but with Dr. Mayer, I received both! Thank you Dr. Mayer.
