Joseph Hines Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
I was very impressed with Dr. Joseph Hines. He made it a point to tell me about the risk of remaining obese and the risk of surgury. He also made a point to explain that he was looking for motivated patients. I feel priveledged to have such a knowledgeable surgeon. The staff was very approachable and professional. The UCLA program seems very vauge in the beginning. They basically want to wheat out the suspecting questions and get to the patients who really need and want the surgury. It is worth the time and wait and just write down those questions for the consultation.
Overall, I would rate Dr. Hines with a 9 - with the scale being 1-10.
He seemed very concerned.
My 1st meeting with Dr.Hines went very well. My daughter was with me as my support person. He explained everything to me, he went over some of my history and asked me questions. I felt that he was already familiar with my medical history. I felt very comfortable. He then gave me an oveview. Asked what I knew of the surgery, I explanied I had been researching this for around 2 years. He then said he wanted me to understand that it was life altering decision. Went over the risks invloved in doing the surgry and the risks that I may encounter being obese. Explained the after care that is involved. I have to join a support group. He then said ok well I do think you qualify for this surgery. I want you to lose some weight and then attend these classe and follow all the instructions on this list. I left feeling very releived and yet so motivated to get the weight off so I could proceed with the actual surgery portion of my new life.... I look forward to dealing with Dr. Hines and his Team.
Dr. Hines What a Doc!
I first met Dr. Hines in Aug. of 2001. I went to UCLA after dumping Kaiser. Org. I went in 4/2000 for a Hernai repair and the rest is hell. I called around and found Dr. Hines. Thank God!
He is Kind-Caring-very skilled and of course has Awsome bed side manners. I have a condition that causes me great pain and Chronic Bowel Obsrtuctions. Dr. Hines does not make one feel stupid. He treats the whole person, not just the surgery site!
Although UCLA is a ways from our home. I would'nt have it any other way.
PS
I have been in many hospitals and I want tell you that UCLA have the best nursung staff I have ever seen!
BE WELL
Notes after my Gastric bypass!
What a terrible time I had in the Hospital.
Someone cut my spleen caused me to have blood tranfusions which totally frecks me out. The care was fair. My Doctor sent me home with a fever Terriable pain dehydrated and later I found out I have a blood clot. Not happy at all.
GOD BLESS
2/18/03 - Meeting the doctor was a pleasent experience. He was very nice and informative. Although he hasn't done many bariatric surgeries, his primary surgeries are LAP. I am confident he will be just fine. The staff was very helpful as well.
Dr. Hines did ask me to lose 10-15 lbs before he would operate. He allowed me to pick my own time frame ( I choose 3 week) and he explained why he needed me to lose the weight. The first reason is so I will be healthier for the actual surgery and the second is to prove my commitment. I have no problems with this, in fact it was expected.
I see Dr. Hines on March 11th for my "weigh in." And my surgery will be in early or mid April.
I see the nutrionist tomorrow.
