Layton Alldredge Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

My surgeon was very pleasant and knowledgable about the lap banding procedure. He sat with my wife and I and spent a long time with us answering our questions and giving good explanations. He made good eye contact and never felt like he was in a hurry. I felt we had his undivided attention. My wife is a nurse and she had a lot of questions that I would not have asked if she was not there. rnrnHis office staff are people who have had the lap banding procedures. They were informative and pleasant on every visit. The first time we went was to a general session that was provided by the surgeon and his nurse. They showed a video slide show and there were many other people there. They provided a packet of information that included information about the procedure, pictures of the band, and costs of the procedures and risks and benefits. There was not pressure in this information session. It was just informational. It was up to me to decide whether I would pursue this or not. They offered a free consultation with our insurance company to see what would be included and they also described payment options if this was not covered by my insurance company. rnrnIn the beginning, I was frustrated with my insurance company. They denied the initial request and indicated that I needed to have formal dietary consultation for 6 months, a psychiatric consultation and a letter from my primary care provider indicating their support of why I needed the surgery. I almost gave up at this point, but my wife convinced me to go through the process. I did benefit from my consultations with the dietician and lost a few pounds during that process. rnrnIn the meantime, my insurance coverage changed and the doctors office staff decided to follow up with my new company. They approved the procedure and we set up a pre-surgery education appointment that included other people. It lasted about 1 1/2 hours and there were several staff members that provided education on the surgery, the eating restrictions and how the diet would progress and resources that would be available after the procedure. They have a support group that meets at the physicians office once a month, but I have choosen not to take advantage of those meetings and to get online with this support group. I do not know what their support group would have been like. It is about 2 hours south of our location. rnrnThe first meeting after surgery was very detailed. It involved visual inspection of the surgery site and asking many questions regarding how I am progressing. Again, he was very personable, explained things so that I could understand and never made me feel like my questions were stupid and did not rush me during this appointment. I scheduled another office visit which I thought would be with him, but when I got there, it was with the nurse. This was really just a follow up on looking at my weight loss, asking if I have had any problems and trying to determine if I needed to have a fill in my band. So far, my weight loss has been very good, so no fill is needed and I have not experienced any attitude or lectures on not following the appropriate procedures. rnrnI was not familiar with this surgeon. I would have liked to have the surgery in my own area. I really like his manner and soft spoken approach. He has done a lot of these procedures and I felt he was open and honest with me. He was also great the day of surgery and explained how things went with my wife right after the procedure. The facility was also great because they handle alot of these patients so the seats were wide, the gowns were big and I never felt embarassed. They provided good explanations. rnrnHe did encourage me to use the support group, but he understood the travel constraints. They do have an office that is closer to my home, so future appointments will be with the nurse and I have decided to set up the appointments in that area. All fills are free up to the first year. They have had people who have never needed a fill and I hope I will be one of them. I recognize the success of this procedure is dependent on me and my compliance with my meal portions and watching my calorie consumption. rnrnI think he was great. No one is perfect, but so far I have been very pleased with the surgeon and his staff. I have also been pleased with the follow up video's and follow up from my case manager from my insurance company. rnrnrnrnI have not found anything I did not like about the surgeon or his staff.

EXCELLENT first impression. I got to know him through e-mail first and he was amazing in how quickly he responded to my questions and how open he was about himself as a surgeon. I asked a lot of pointed questions directly about his qualifications and percentages and he was very open and honest.
When I met him in person, I knew I would stick with him. He is amazing! Very personable and willing to take the time to reassure me and answer my questions. I would choose him again in a heartbeat!
I would recommend that future patients not be scared to ask him any questions. No questions are stupid when you are going forward with a life alternating procedure. Dr. Alldredge is very open, knowledgeable, competant and best of all willing to answer any question you ask.
The only thing I didn't like about him was that his hands were cold when he met with me on my surgery day. Just kidding! We were joking that he needed to warm his hands up before performing my surgery because they were cold. He had been holding a cold drink in his hands when we talked. He has a great sense of humor and I really have nothing that I dislike about him. Great guy to work with!
I was very impressed with the professionalism of his office staff and their kindness.
The emphasis on aftercare follow up and support meetings is great. I look forward to staying involved with my doctor, his staff, and previous patients!
I will be attending a support/aftercare group once a month and will be visiting with the doctor about every two weeks at first.
I would rate him a 10 on a scale of 1-10! I had been set up with another doctor before this one but that doctor would have only gotten a 5 on my scale. Dr. Alldredge has a great bedside manner...which is extremely important to me for this type of surgery. Additionally, his surgical competence seems to be without question. He is an absolutely fabulous all-around great doctor!

July 2003 - I met with Dr. Alldredge and think he's great! I took my husband with me so he could get to know Dr. A and ask any questions he had. Dr. Alldredge just got back from a medical seminar about lap band surgery. Janet & Mary (office staff) have been awesome. They answer all my questions and have stayed "on top" of my info file. Dr. Alldredge & Dr. Hansen have a pre-op class. It is run by Vivienne. She is an RN at AltaView Hosp. and also Dr. A's first lap band patient. It is so nice to ask questions from someone that knows about the lap band "first hand". Great info and handouts. Kristen was also at the pre-op class and talked about excercise. I was approved by my insurance and have scheduled my surgery date!
June 2003 - I haven't met with Dr. Alldredge yet. After receiving my medical file from Dr. McKeen, I found out Dr. Alldredge is on my insurance. I took the file over on Monday. Janet was very nice and helpful. Their staff will send in for the approval from insurance. Just a waiting game now.
