Leigh Murphy Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Murphy was a wonderful doctor!
The staff members are great and very friendly.
There was nothing I did not like about my visit with them.
These people are very professional and will help you in any way they can.
They strongly emphasize the importance of your after care.
They addressed the risks of surgery in a professional manner.
I rate them to be fantastic with me. I could not of asked for a better surgeon or staff.
Both surgical and bedside manner were great. I even got a call at home to make sure I was doing well by Dr. Murphy himself.
Well the journey has started. After reading and talking to several people who "would do it again", I have had my first visit. Dr. Murphy was great!!! He answered all my questions, honestly(this means a lot to me)even if the answer was not what I wanted/needed to hear. Dr. Murphy also explained even tho some of the problems I was having would not be "fixed" that he could at a later date correct those also. He actually spent alot of time with me. My BMI (37.3)wasn't enough on its own to support the surgery. But, with my unlining health problems (ulcers,GERD,DJD of knees)and sending me for a sleep study and he doesnt think we"ll have any problems. It (the sleep study)was scheduled quickly (June 21st) one week after my appointment. So after this its all up to the Blue Cross. So you guys keep your fingers crossed for me!!!!
I have known Dr Murphy for a long time both professionally (as a Nurse) and through shared experiences in and out of church. He is very competent surgically and has a great bedside manner. His office staff is very knowledgable and helpful with my needs ans questions. He stresses a support group which meets at the hospital. He is very clear about possible risks of the surgery and gives you a book with all the qualifications for GBS, pre-op and post-op care, diet, etc. Very thorough.
Dr. Murphy struck me as a very friendly, sincere, down to earth sort of surgeon. I don't know what I was expecting, exactly, but he was comfortable with myself and my husband. He answered all questions and offered information at our first meeting. My impression of him did not change upon subsequent meetings. His demeanor and bedside manner is great. He's easy to get along with and always takes the time to answer any questions you might have.
The staff at Talledega Surgery is both professional and compassionate. With as many phone calls, questions, concerns, and frustrations as I dealt with on my road to surgery, the staff was always friendly, understanding, and quick to respond to any issue that came up. They worked tirelessly with my insurance in order to get everything set for surgery, taking a lot of 'pressure' or 'weight' (pardon the pun) off of my shoulders.
I would highly recommend new patients considering surgery to his office. He does not have a tremendous backlog of patients so appointments and surgery can be scheduled in a reasonable amount of time. Once I had my surgery date, a slight complication forced a change in the schedule and I was rescheduled for just ten days later.
I have personally referred friends to his office who are considering this surgery and I have been very happy with both my results and relationship with Dr. Murphy and his staff.
My only negative comment (and it is a small one) had to do with the hospital itself. A small facility, there were a few times where I felt that I needed a bit more company/advice/checking on, but all worked out well in the end.
If I could improve anything, it would be more structured education about my post op diet. However, it should be noted that I live 3 hours from Talladega and therefore can not feasably make the support group meetings, which do take place twice a month. Perhaps if I could, my concerns or questions would have better answers.
My first impression was a good one, he tells you how it is and answers guestions thoroughly. He was late for my appointment but its understandable, if I were that patient I would hope he would drop everything and take care of things instead of having another surgeon do it. He has a wonderful nurse named Michelle, she is also just darling and keeps you updated on changes and always returns your calls. The rest of the staff was really welcomong as well. The Lady that handles the insurances is Ann, she is also a very pleasant and compotent person to work with. The after care is a very structured one, it doesn't just leave you hanging not knowing what to do. Dr. Murphy is a very thorough surgeon, I feel very safe being in his care. I will probably add to this later once my surgery is completed. So far the only negative thing I can say is its a 3 1/2 hour drive for me but it could be worse.
I chose Leigh Murphy and Charles Lambert as I knew them from a ministry we have all worked in over the past 10 years, after I learned they performed this type of surgery. I called to make an appointment, and was mailed a packet which thoroughly explained the surgery, risks, complications, and post-surgery diet.
I first met with Dr. Murphy in January, 2002, at his office in Talladega, Alabama. The office has wide sofas and chairs, and the staff was very courteous and respectful. I filled out a medical history and met with him and his nurse, Michelle. Both Dr. Murphy and Nurse Michelle were empathetic to my situation. After hearing me explain my history, examining me, and acknowledging my pre-examination understanding of GBS, Dr. Murphy said he was ready to fight BCBS to get approval for me. He said it would take about 6 weeks to get approval.
Dr. Murphy is a pleasant fellow who my wife noted is the opposite of the arrogant surgeons she has dealt with in Birmingham. He answered all of my questions and told me to call if I had any more after leaving.
Drs. Murphy and Lambert operated upon me on April 11. He tried using the Laproscopic method and after that failed, he used the Open RNY surgery. I awoke in ICU and was moved from there after 2 nights. Every day, either Dr. Murphy or Dr. Lambert came by in the morning and evening. Their bedside manner was reassuring.
Drs. Murphy and Lambert have developed an extensive post-surgery written diet along with Dietition Brandi Green of Citizens Baptist Hospital in Talladega. Additionally, Ms. Green is available for consultation at any time post-op without additional cost. They have also started a support group which meets monthly at Citizens Baptist Hospital and is open to everyone interested in WLS and those who've undergone the surgery, whether or not performed by Drs. Murphy and Lambert.
I heartily recommend these doctors for WLS.
