Following what I have to say to update this, you will see that I had been scheduled with Dr. Gaar in Lousville at the VA. I am choosing to leave this on here for anyone who may choose to visit this hospital for their GBP.
Dr. Major Ward with IACH at Fort Knox was my original surgeon. After some detours in the VA, he is now the surgeon I am returning to for my Gastric Bypass. (He had gotten deployed to Iraq...this is why I went to Lousville.) Major Ward has been very great with my from the get go back in September of 2002. He is very polite and understanding the world of obesity. Till this day...and I am sure this won't change...I will view him the same. He is a man that I would trust with me, and I would recommend to others. He is very upfront and honest with individuals. This is a characteristic that is very important to me. His office staff for the most part is very good. His secretary, Mrs. Ruiz, is very good too. She is polite and understand and honest about how she supports the surgery. Like I said before, I would recommend this doctor to anyone; although I believe you must be military to have to surgery done my him. If I could recommend my family going to him, I most definately would. I tell everyone this because if I trust a gentleman enough with me, to think about my family, then I would trust him with anyone. I have seen what he can do with other patients, and I am very proud to say that I am a patient of his. Major Ward will tell you many times to attend group meetings, and that this process will change the rest of your life. He does stress that he will been seeing you after the surgery for routine visits. He takes very good care of his patients, as I have seen. He tells you the good and bad of the surgery. I believe he makes sure that you are well informed of this procedure. He makes sure that you are confident that you want to partake in this life changing experience, and that you are well informed of what you will have to do for the rest of your life. If I could rate the surgery on a 1-10 list 10 being the highest...I would most definately give him a 10. With saying that, I too need to be honest...the one thing that bothered me about Major Ward is that he does not run many tests prior to surgery. I was comfortable with that, while others may not be. Other than this, I cannot say anything else that would be negative so far.
I have only met the surgeon once in my four visits to the VA, but I have to say that he really knows what he is doing. He is very thorough and informative. I have to say for the most part things are okay with him at the VA; although potential clients should know that this is a training hospital and therefore you meet knew assistants and nurses all the time. I can say some are very nice and others need alittle TLC. Dr. Gaar really pushes the aftercare. He has it set up so you have to come back in stages, which I think is important because that gives you time to ask questions and really see progress. I did not get to talk to Dr. Gaar for long, as he is very busy, but he did address the risks of surgery. I fortunately know many of the risks because I did much research before I decided that this would be the best option for me. As far as the rest goes, I will have to let you know after the surgery which is still waiting to be scheduled.

Dr Ward is one of the most caring doctors at Ft Knox. His bedside manner was excellent. He insists on leaving you smiling even though you in pain, lol. I would recommend him to anyone considering this surgery in the Ft Knox community. His staff is also very helpful and friendly.
